fruitnut, hope you don't mind me picking your brain (again). i'm now thinking that i will plant the trees in separate containers for the exact same reason (mobility). but when i bought the 15-gallon bearss lime dwarf tree, the guy at the nursery said i should repot it in a larger pot (at least 2 sizes up) within 2 months. if i choose to keep it in its 15-gal container from the nursery, is there anything i should do right now to help it along? yes, you're right. the tree does have lots of leaves and even tiny small limes. should I cut the tiny limes off (think i read that somewhere)? i'm guessing that you had your trees since they were little baby trees and choosing to stop at 15-gal. what if the trees were acquired at 15 gallon, would you still keep it in the same pot or go up a few sizes and when would you stop then? whats the longest amount of time you've kept a fruit tree in a 15-gal container? thank you so much for your responses! :)

Fog: You are right: they are 3 different fruits of the same species like a navel, Valencia and a Midknight grafted unto a single root stock trunk. I have not seen 3 rootstocks in one container. I popped that question here a long time ago having to grow 3 different rootstocks of 3 different trees planted in a triangle sort of in a large pot and Joe real answered that question as I answered them as above. On your second question, I can not answer you. I am not an authority regarding grafting or on anything for that matter. But as for your question,that would be something to see. You are saying grafting a branch between 2 trunks of 2 rootstock? To tell you the truth I think that is possible and not hard to do but from what I read on grafting noone has done this _on citrus. But I've seen it done many things like a shape of a ladder, or shape of a church from plants planted together and while young twisted the branches and let them combine each other branches to shape like a figure of anything their mind set to. In due time these branches whose bark and wood healed as one. Toni: You guys are of disadvantage in terms of availability and in terms of weather and yet you guys keep pushing on growing them- Atta girl!

You all have good taste . I dig them all and have them all . Everyone has good points . I got my original 'Joe Witt' from Heronswood . It is around 40" and still in a pot after 3 years . I am now in the mood to start planting more . If you want it to have more of a multi stem appearance try leaning it to one side to encourage newer growth to come from down low .That might work , but that is not its nature to be multi stem . I never really see them that much , because most people don't even know what it is . I have two 6' tall A. penn. 'Erythrocladum' and they are gorgeous . The striations are better than A. c. 'Phoenix' , but 'Phoenix' is just brilliant . The one to get is 'Bump' by far more white than anything out there. It makes 'Joe Witt' look tan . No one ever has any for sale . I have two 6-7' that will make you drool . 'Silver Vein' is a clean purple . Most growers are taking as much scion wood as possible due to the demand and difficulty . I hear A. penn. 'Erythrocladum'is about as easy as trying to put a diaper on a wolverine . Wedge grafts tend to look better as long as they are not side wedge grafts . I see growers putting two scions on one rootstock . To answer your question , I would plant more than one like MJH said . That would be cool to have two different colors . Acer negundo 'Winter Lightning' looks so dang good right now , especially with low afternoon sun . The original tree was spotted on I-24 near Chattanooga some years ago by Pat McCracken . He actually tried several times to get it going . Then finally during a rain storm , his umbrella got hit by lightning , hence the name . Cool! I would say close but I don't have a machine that measures DNA .thanks

In brief, you can cut off whatever you like - it is virtually indestructible. cut the branches off close to the trunk, and the excess trunks as close to the main trunk as you can. Tony
