Ficus Robusta. Multiple plants in container or multiple trunks?

Hi,

I'm starting some ficus tree's in containers. One i'm going to leave uncut and the others i'm going to trim to a single trunk. The one in the picture is the one i'm leaving as is. I was curious if it was one plant or three.. But I planted it last night and probably shouldn't dig it back up to look at the roots.

For the other two i'm going to plant that I cut to single trunks.. Is it safe to assume they are one plant? Or do they get sold with multiple plants in a small container.. I imagine if I cut two trunks that are actually individual plants and not just a trunk of the same tree, I would end up with mass of dead roots in my container which would be bad, yes?

This may be a silly question, but i'm new to container gardening and I just want to make sure i'm not setting my ficus up for failure.

Thanks for your help.
