Acer tegmentosum- how to generate multiple trunks?

Hi, I was finally able to get hands on a specimen of A. tegmentosum 'Joe Witt'-- I don't have alot of experience with maples, so I am relying on this forum's collective expertise. What I have is a 30" single whip with nice pairs of leaf buds every 6 inches. It's been topped already-- I think probably only 12-18" was taken off. I'd like to grow this as a multi-trunk specimen to show off its spectacular bark. Should I plant it as is or cut it back more drastically? If the latter, should I do this now or in the spring? What about root stimulator? Thanks in advance,

Hobbes
