Please critique my lighting plan!
Comments (2)It depends on what you like. Personally, I have six 800 lumen LEDs over my 7.5' x 3.5' island, and it is not too much. I also have quite a few more 575 lumen lights in the kitchen. All are on dimmers. You have about as much lighting as my pre-tearout kitchen, and that was just okay. Since you don't have under cabinet lights on the window side, you should move those two lights to be pretty much over the edge of the counter. If this is supposed to be pretty complete, I notice that you are missing some power receptacles through the house....See MoreCritique my Kitchen Lighting Plan, please!
Comments (9)seosmp--I will have UCL. It's in my current kitchen and love how it lights the backsplash and removes the dark recesses from the counter, but I don't think it's enough for task lighting too, hence my desire to place the cans half over the counter and half over the floor. Do you think this is a good placement? Or not? I haven't decided on 6in vs 4 in yet... gpraceman--That's a great idea to try one out. I haven't done that. Can I DIY it with my current cans? (I'm not DIY savvy!) palimpsest--The can over the passageway was going to be an "eyeball" to highlight art on the wall beside the fridge. I have changed that now, however. I also eliminated the 2 cans as you mentioned and have brought everything into line. Thanks for the tip about the "grid." I hadn't thought of it that way. How far apart should recessed be placed? This is a huge open concept kitchen/living/dining so that makes it extra challenging!...See MorePlease Critique My Lighting Plan!! (Line Item Quote Included!)
Comments (10)Carol - thanks again for the feedback. I have made some changes and I'll note them below. Every time I look at the plan I end up removing cans and subbing out with other items. I will note that every can minus the outdoor lighting are 4" cans rather than dated looking 6" cans. (See below for update comments) David - I never thought about that but that is a good suggestion. The ceiling will be a stained beadboard. -I am not familiar with surface mount disc lighting or how good the technology is (I've spent all my time researching recessed and the best retrofit kits). Could you please give me a quick and dirty of the best surface mount lighting available? (Product links would be helpful as well). -Yep - good call. Wash room is now 2 sconces and no recessed lights. -That's a good idea on the surface mounts for mud room - If you could please either link me to some info on them, etc. I will take them into consideration. -David - noted on the wi-fi issues. I'm thinking of making a central control tower in the basement for all/most media equip (same idea the Control4 guys pitched me). Some Miscellaneous Lighting Updates: #1. 1st Floor Wash room only has 2 sconces now #2. Dining room is only planned to have a rectangular lighting fixture hanging over dining room table for mood lighting #3. Fixture in Foyer now and removed cans over stairs and lining steps with sconces at top/bottom of each stairway. #4. Cans are removed from all 2nd floor bathrooms (minus water closet can) and sconces are going to be used in both master bath & guest bath (2 per vanity in master, 3 for double vanity in guest). #5. Backside of watercloset is a make-up vanity and will use mirror with in-mirror lighting #6. 3rd floor bath removed can, went with 2 sconces and a light in the shower. Thanks again for your help everyone. I think this is really starting to come along well! Andrew...See MoreX-Post - Please Critique My Lighting Plan!
Comments (8)Sorry guys & girls - was away for a few days and just now catching up. Renovator8 - the lighting will be 4" recessed cans with the newest model of Feit retrofit kits (My research confirmed this new model has surpassed the CREE CR4's I was originally planned on using). 94+ CRI, 2700K light color - and CostCo rebranded a ton of them and is currently offering them at 1/2 price of what they sell for in Home Depot. (Identical model # and everything) Casey - Thanks for the comment as the coiffured ceilings were one of "my things" I had to have. I get my coiffured ceilings in the living/library and she gets her Victoria + Albert freestanding soaking tub with chandelier in the marble bathroom so I think it was a fair trade... Regardless, a lot of this wouldn't have been done if I wasn't in the real estate industry and was paying "retail prices" as a buyer with no control over the build process. (It's amazing some of the markups). Carol - we do have an "idea" of a layout for the Great Room and that's a good idea, i'll figure out a way to post it and see what feedback I get. Great suggestions on the curtains as well. Thanks - I hope these threads are helping you as much as they are me as we both go through this process! Andrew...See Morenexp
