Thanksgiving Cactus Still "Rotting"?
Comments (20)Morning, FF, here comes the punch..lol, kidding. I agree, when roots fill a pot 'X' plants should be repotted in larger containers. However, imo, transplanting from a 4" pot, to let's say 8" or larger is a no-no. Plants that are naturally tiny, 'ex: miniature African Violet, Lithops, Crassula elegans needn't be potted in containers larger than 4". Shallow-rooted plants, when repotted, require wider, not deeper containers. TC's have shallow roots. Ever go to a conservatory? Our conservatory set-up is as close to various plants' natural habitat as possible. TC's/CC/Epi/certain Orchids, are either attached to trees or in-between rocks. Depending on type. After studying roots I discovered they're not all that large. Just my opinion. :) PS...I'm not saying TC's won't grow in a large pot. Often,, during summer when plants are outside, they're knocked down, brushed against, squirrel attacked, etc. TC segments break, land in a neighboring containers, some as large as 14". Yet, segments root. Still, imo, TC/CC/EC bloom when root bound. :) Toni...See MoreFirst Time Cactus Owner! Moon Cactus Rotting? SOS!
Comments (20)Hi! So I'm a newbie to the cacti parenting world and was hoping someone may be able to tell me if I'm doing this right? I picked these cuties up from Home depot a couple months ago. The yellow one had this great flower bud looking like it might bloom soon but now it looks like I killed it. When I first got them they didn't have the little...bulbs? on the side of them or on top (like my red one.) I thought this was a sign I was doing well with them but now I'm worried I might be doing the same to the cacti that I did to the flower and I of course don't want that! So what I've been doing is checking the soil every week to feel if it feels like it's completely dry. Usually by the end of the week it feels that way. so I take them out of the decorative pots (cause they don't have drainage holes) and water them thoroughly with a slow but steady sink stream. Once the soil seems to have sufficient water, I allow the extra water to drain into the sink before putting them back into their decorative pots and putting them back on the windowsill for direct sunlight. I read that in winter you shouldn't water them as much (like once a month?) but we are still in fall her in NC. Am I doing this right or just being an idiot? I'm kinda bummed I lost the little flower but if I can encourage them to grow more I want to try! But mostly I want to be a good cacti parent....See MorePossible cactus rot?
Comments (2)Is it soft and mushy?. the roots look good. It looks like normal colorization that happens under the ground. I Make a mark it with a sharpie where it ends. Take a good look at the roots. If that top is rotted , then the roots probably have rot also. If it is rot and it does travel upwards from the mark, then you have to do drastic surgery and cut ALL the rot off till you find healthy non discolored flesh., sprinkle with sulfur or cinnamon on the cut keep rot from forming, and let it callous for several days in the shade. . Then put in your new fast draining gritty soil and DO NOT WATER till you feel the resistance from new roots when you gently tug on it....See MoreIs it possible to save a cactus that has begun to rot?
Comments (4)A picture would be helpful, but if it is rot you can save it by cutting off the rot, letting the wound dry and rerooting the remaining plant. It will take a while, but if you don't do anything it will spread and kill the whole plant. Or you can just root some of the pads. I just lost a plant that got the same treatment as all of my other 100+ plants. Sometimes it just happens, but in my case I think it was root mealies. If I would have taken the time to unpot it and look at it, it would be in better shape today. I had to cut 3/4s of it off and now I'm hoping for the best. When I finally took it out of the pot, it did not have one root. Sometimes there can be a slight cut or nick and the plant will get rot that way as well, so it's hard to say. Here's a link talking about rot: Causes of rot And here is a link to a thread that explains what to do in more detail Can my cactus be saved? Good luck with whatever you decide to do. It always hard to lose a plant....See MoreKatlynn NY (5a)
