Had my hair cut in Paris once, but not a new do. It was fine even though we had to comment by pointing and waving scissors around. Good luck !

If I have to be with my parents at a time when my hair needs cutting, then I'll go to some salon in their town. Sometimes, the cut is okay and sometimes it's not, but since your hair grows out, it's not the end of the world if it's a bad cut. It's just annoying. Hope you are happy with your cut, @idaclaire.

I have! Way back in 1984, my sister and I were in Ireland visiting family and my very cool older cousin suggested we get our hair cut at a salon in Dublin. Great cuts, gorgeous color — we both looked so good my parents didn’t recognize us when they picked us up at JFK. Whenever I see photos from that trip, I think what a great souvenir our haircuts were!

I like to get my hair cut in NYC any time I visit. I have never been disappointed.

I find a salon visit relaxing, and so I used to always make it habit of an appointment on vacation. I had the most fabulous haircut in Scottsdale AZ once.

Oh, hell no (can I say that??)! I've had too many bad cuts and It took me years to find a stylist I was happy with. I would be absolutely miserable with a less than great cut and it would absolutely ruin my vacay. However, recently on a cruise I did get a hair treatment and, had I needed a cut, "might" have let the stylist do it. She seemed to know her stuff.

When I was at a conference in San Francisco DH joined me but he was super busy that week so he had no time to get his hair cut. We stay near Chinatown, so he had his hair cut by an Asian barber and he said it was the best cut he ever had. Here, he used to go to an old fashioned barbershop but now he goes to Sport Clips since his former barber retired.

Nope - I’m very particular about my hair cuts and there’s no way I’d get my hair cut on vacation. Bad enough when I moved and had to find a new salon - took two years to find a stylist who could do a good cut. I suppose if you have long hair or a simple bob and just need a trim it would be low risk but that’s not the case for me.

Nope. Would not. I always plan around my vacations. If worse comes to worse I can poney tail it.

I'm with 3Katz. Although my hairstyle looks really simple, not everyone can get it right. I'm not sure why.

Interesting how some of us would and some of us wouldn't! This will be a first for me, but it's already short and it grows quickly, so if I really dislike it, it'll only be for a little while. I am not quite sure why I've always wanted to do this though... maybe the change of scenery and routine puts me in the mood to go outside my hair's comfort zone. I dunno. ;)

Personally, I always travel WITH my 3 stylists -- me, myself and I -- to avoid troublesome unknown stylists. This has worked for me for over 50 years, after far too many lousy cuts. And the $$$ I've saved over that time? Nice! =)

Why not? The “Notorious RBG” does. Let me explain: when I was in law school, RBG was a guest of honor/speaker. This was circa 1995, and she went to the Super Cuts near the university. The stylist had no idea who her customer was, but one of my classmates who was getting her haircut in the next stylist’s station nearly fell out of her chair! This was pre-selfie/social media days, and I’m not into either, but that is one picture I wish someone had taken, to go with the great story. Love RBG!

I finally started going to Fantastic Sams after realizing that a good stylist can be at a fancy salon OR at a place like FS and why pay the high prices. I was in there and saw the wife of a very famous band member.... in fact, one of Faron's favorite bands. She lives in my neighborhood and she recognized me. I could not believe that she was in FS, because she could go to anyone and pay for her hair. She said that she always went there to have blowouts and kept seeing all these cute haircuts going out the door while she waited. She decided just to start having her haircut there!

Sure why not? It's hair it will grow. I have no comprehension of people attached to a person they pay to cut their hair.

We don’t have Fantastic Sams near me so maybe their operating model is different than the budget salon near me, which is Super Cuts. I have gone to Super Cuts and had great cuts, and horrendous cuts. When I have gotten a great cut, I ask the stylists name. Sure enough, when I need cut next, that person is gone and they won’t tell me where. I stopped going there, and now have a regular stylist.

While I have gotten holiday cuts often, because I now have regular person, I probably wouldn’t. If I was going on holiday and needed a cut, she’d try to fit me in.

I tend to get my hair cut/done prior to a vacation if the timing works out. If I felt supremely unkempt I might be tempted if the vacation was in a location with a top notch stylists. But I'd have to be feeling REALLY unkempt to bother giving vacation time for that.

It never occurred to me to get my hair cut while on vacation. However, I found a great stylist when I was going to university in another city. For years, I drove almost 4 hours round trip to get her to cut my hair. Then one time, I phoned for an appt and she had moved to a city an hour further away and I really couldn't justify a 6 hour drive just to get my hair done. Still pine for some one to do my hair like she did though.

Because I am on a pretty regular schedule with my own hair stylist, I have never had to get mine cut while on vacation. Many years ago, however, I was in Washington DC working for several months. My hairdresser’s husband was battling cancer and when I went home once, she couldn’t cut my hair, so I found a salon in the DC area. It just wasn’t the same but was ok.

When I was maybe 16, I was in (of all places) Monte Carlo w my parents and I got haircut and a "do." The cut was not much different than home (a teen girls long hair is not that exciting no matter what). But, similar to Jojoco's experience this past summer in SA, they did my hair up and *teased* it! OMG it was crazy. I looked like this:

I made a point of getting my hair cut while I was in London years ago. It wasn't as special as I hoped. :) Perhaps because the salon was random? If I go to Paris, I'll get a cut there for sure, but I'll research a salon first. I associate these metropolitan cities with glamour and cutting edge fashion and I guess I figure a vacation is the perfect time to get out of my comfort zone and reinvent myself a bit. Every month, I used to read Allure magazine's salon directory diligently. They made hairdressers sound like such wizards, I wanted to justify the expense of traveling to them for a hair makeover.

I did once, when we were at our beach cottage. It was bad. Did the same with DD one summer — at a different salon. Had to get it re-cut two weeks later at home. So I’m done with haircuts in that town!

However, about 10 years ago we traveled to Jackson Hole with the kids. My oldest DS was a difficult teenager who insisted on growing his hair long even though, omg, it looked awful. Suddenly in the middle of vacation he decided he wanted to get it cut. Before he could change his mind, we found a salon in Jackson Hole and he got it cut short the next day! One of my too vacation moments! I should find pics and post them, it was pretty dramatic.

You do risk it being the best haircut of your life, and will have to travel back every few weeks for a trim.

Holiday... as in "I'm on holiday." ;) And I have the time to spare, as this is a very low key one. Been hiking every morning and mostly chilling in the afternoon.

Maddie, I actually thought about that too. But I can't exactly justify a 9 hour drive every couple of weeks. Ha! One good thing about social media is being able to see a stylist's work on IG. I think that's a pretty good indication of whether or not someone knows current cutting techniques or is more likely to give one a frumpy look. I bypassed one salon in the area because their styles looked a bit stale.

Interesting stories above about the famous folks spotted in a salon! Doing the notorious RBG's hair?!? Wow! What a cool thing that would have been!

There are two good movies out about RBG. One a documentary and one a fictionalization. I recommend them.

My hairstyle is so easy a toddler could cut it. So, no, I wouldn't hesitate. It wouldn't occur to me to get a haircut on vacation, but... I do find them relaxing in the right setting. If you find it fun and interesting to do on your vacation time, do it!

Go for it - that's all I can say. You're more adventurous than I am. I always get a cut and color a few days before I leave on vacation so that I don't have to worry about it while I'm away. I even visited my hair stylist the day before having a double knee replacement because I knew I would be at an in-patient physical rehab hospital for 10 days.

Ok, I went for it! It's super short now, a decided pixie albeit with long bangs! Loved the adorable stylist and would definitely return if only she weren't so far away. I ended up buying product so spent a little more than intended, but still overall quite pleased and am glad I did it.

My husband is having surgery when we return home so I wouldn't have had a chance to get in to see my regular stylist anyway. So this all worked well for our upcoming schedule too.

ETA... a big change from just about this time last year! I will not miss this mess o' yellow hair in the least.

Many years ago, I hurt my knee before Spring Break and could drive to get my hair cut. I was really shaggy but oh well. By mid week on vacation, I was doing better but my hair was driving me crazy. It was humid and my hair was frizzy and curly. I had spotted a salon just outside of the resort and was able to get in that day. I got a cute cut and felt like myself.

I haven’t gotten my hair cut on my vacation, but my stylist was on her vacation visiting friends in my city where I was going to college. She cut my hair in exchange for me babysitting one night. Good deal all around!
