Faux Wood beams in Kitchen
Comments (2)I saw a faux beam in an HGTV show and it looked fantastic. You could not tell the difference and it was very easy to install because it weighs almost nothing. You can also see pictures in Google-images if you search for "faux beam kitchen"....See MoreHow to light post and beam - dark wood ceiling
Comments (7)Well, yes. You can shine a light on the ceiling and, because it's such a dark color, most of the light is absorbed rather than bouncing off of it. With such large, dark surfaces, these rooms will never be so full of light as they would if they were all whites and beiges. On the other hand, an all-beige room is never going to have the depth and intimacy and charm that your rooms have. I'd be inclined to make the best of what they are rather than trying to make them into something they're not. I'd try lighting wall surfaces with sconces or track lighting, to provide indirect ambient light and keep it from feeling like a cave, and use pendants, table and floor lamps to light other areas as needed....See MoreWhat did you do with the obtrusive beam running across your kitch
Comments (27)Our renovation could have resulted in such a beam... Instead, we are recessing it. An architect or ngineer can tell you whether or not it is possible in your case. In our case, we are removing a load bearing wall and putting in a steel I-beam, the sides of which will be packed in wood. The floor joists above will all be cut (after being shored up, of course!). Then the beam is installed, and the joists are attached to the wood packing with joist hangers. The beam itself just fits in the ceiling, supported at either end by columns (hidden in other walls). A conversation with an architect is free. We had 2 guys who basically told us what the design would be while gathering info to bud on the job. That unfo was sufficient to get budgetary proposals from contractors... So getting a ballpark estimate us pretty much free. YMMV, of course....See MoreCoffered ceiling with wood beams
Comments (15)Well I wouldn't say that no one likes beams. But the question was about authentic. There are plenty of ways to get spice other than coffered beams. Coffer alone is ok, beams alone is ok, etc. There will always be people who require authentic and there are those who don't care as long as it looks good to them. I can tell you that authentic will stand the test of time and be more broadly appealing. Coffered and beams is not authentic. We are considering doing beams and I certainly will try to make them appear somewhat authentic even though they won't be. That room is a hot mess in my opinion - carries the stone and brick conflict to the interior of the house. And yeah - that column - crazy!...See MoreL thomas
