Best way to grow/support monstera deliciosa?
Comments (20)Kyle..about your Obelisk..it depends where you bought it. I can't tell you the number of 'arbors and bird feeder/hanging basket poles' I bought, hoping they were strong enough to hold an outdoor vine, feeder, plant.. stand erect. They sent thin metal that wouldn't hold a flea. lol I finally bought a decent arbor that's held a number of years. More expensive, but if I added what I paid and would have continued paying for cheaper versions, I could have purchased three expensive types. lol Pics online/catalogs look strong. What a farce! lol Logees. I won't express my opinion, since you have plants on the way. However, I will say, in the mid-90's, Logee's was my favorite, non-local nursery. That's awful about your H. Lauterbachii. I was given one as a gift, purchased from Logees. It wasn't bad. Expensive--stood about 9" tall, several leaves and well-rooted. It's still around, but very slow-growing. Don't know if I'll be on earth when/if it blooms, lol. I hope your Monstera is nice..LMK, okay? I checked Ebay..only green. The seller I bought from with both variegated types, usually sends healthy plants. I was so disappointed when the two variegatas arrived. Think I have a pic, but would have to look for it. Thankfully, prices weren't too bad, each under 15.00. Still, that's more than I prefer to pay, unless a plant is in great health. Many of GlassHouseWorks prices increased. I once phoned, asking for a certain variegated Schefflera..he said, he might have some the following spring..cuttings..175.00..Sure, I'll take a dozen. lol. But GHW's sends healthy plants, or they did..it's been a while since I ordered from them. Kyle, are you growing Lily of the Valley in a container or garden?? Danny, I'd like to walk down your alley, Free plants..The price is right. lol. Seriously, I don't browse through alleys..When we first moved here, walked our dog down alleys, people tossed Azaleas and other flowering plants that could have been grown indoors. I was too embarrassed to grab them though, lol. Someone discarded a brand new plant shelf..They assembled it backwards..so it fell foreward. I got that shelf, re-assembled..it's fantastic..Bet it cost 50.00-75.00 nowadays. I agree, Adansonii is a super fast-grower..Mine is a few yrs old, growing up a swerved, metal stake, but it needs something stronger. The metal tilts. It's leaning on plant shelves before a window. Comments (9)I actually went out and gathered 35 bags of leaves this fall. (Not a tree in my yard, the neighbors yes, but I can get them pre-bagged for free anywhere in the city!). Did the same thing last year out front so I know this works. #1--build raised bed--cheap lumber in a square 3'x8' (I'm short so 3' is better than the usual 4'Wide) #2--filled with a bale of straw--till 6-8" thick, add leaves, plus free compost from the city. Water well between each layer. #3--Then let it sit and compost for the winter. By spring it will be half as thick and ready to add just enough soil on top to plant the plants. My tomato plants were almost 7' tall--despite all the rains it drained very well and saved my garden. This year that vegetable garden will be flower beds (out front) and doing the same thing for raised beds out back--yep, 35 bags of oak leaves gone in a snap!!...See Moresnake plant leaf propagation-the correct way?
Comments (3)Not too difficult. I would make a nice, clean straight cut near the lower part of a healthy mature leaf. You can let the cut dry for a day. Insert into a porous, sterile potting mixture about 1/2" or an inch with at least another inch or more still above ground. Water lightly and keep in a warm, bright place. Pup will eventually (months) emerge and continue to grow and form its own roots etc. Have fun and good luck!...See MoreColeus plant 'failing' in many ways...
Comments (8)Tiffany couldn't have said it better. With a fast draining soil, you have a far less chance of ever rotting a plant. I am learning all the time, but way back when I was a rank beginner, I killed a few plants to root rot. But this was because they were in heavy soil! I noticed it took FOREVER for the soil to dry out, but it didn't dawn on me that they were in the wrong mix, and that this would eventually kill the plant. After those experiences, I went to underwatering, without realizing it, for fear of root rot. Well, I killed quite a few plants that way too! I was grossly underwatering because of my fear. I could never keep hoyas, and now I know why. They died of thirst! I now have ten hoyas, and all are perfectly healthy, thriving and growing. The reason is, they are in a fast draining, and I water them much more often than I did before. About once every 4 days in summer. and they are in 4" pots. The key is a light, fast draining soil, and then it's pretty hard to over water, unless, of course, you get really carried away. I use a combo of Miracle Gro, perlite (close to equal parts) and a half handful of orchid bark....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
