'Love Plant' (Kalanchoe pinnata???) failing to thrive
Comments (4)As the other posters have noted, your soil is unsuitable for for this plant (which should do well for you) - you haven't enough porosity, lad. Cut the soil by at least 50% perlite, or read one of the many soil discussions (look for posts with a lot of responses and make your own soil), but you've got your plants in slow-death, yet there's hope still. The pot for which these plants should be grown maybe should be only an inch or two larger than the root ball(s) of the plants. Most Kalanchoes can grow like tropicals at times, and this is one of them. You just have to have it in a more appropriate home and hearth....See MoreBringing in WAY too many plants
Comments (38)I dragged one more plant into the garage last week. It's a Jatropha curcas (a.k.a. physic nut) from which I've been expecting flowers for the past two years. Instead it has concentrated on growing into a 5-foot tall multistemmed tree. I had to hold onto it, though, since according to folk medicine it is "abortifacient, anodyne, antiseptic, cicatrizant, depurative, diuretic, emetic, hemostat, lactagogue, narcotic, purgative, rubefacient, styptic, vermifuge, and vulnerary, physic nut is a folk remedy for alopecia, anasarca, ascites, burns, carbuncles, convulsions, cough, dermatitis, diarrhea, dropsy, dysentery, dyspepsia, eczema, erysipelas, fever, gonorrhea, hernia, incontinence, inflammation, jaundice, neuralgia, paralysis, parturition, pleurisy, pneumonia, rash, rheumatism, scabies, sciatica, sores, stomachache, syphilis, tetanus, thrush, tumors, ulcers, uterosis, whitlows, yaws, and yellow fever" Chances are one or more of those afflictions will come my way eventually (excepting parturition and "uterosis"), so it's good to have a cure on hand. Besides, the seeds can be processed into biodiesel fuel. Hopefully the plant will stay dormant in the garage until spring....See Morewhat's wrong with my coleus plant? Its dying?
Comments (20)to gardengurl49 I live in the tropics and had exactly and precisely the same problem which I solved by bringing the coleus into the house. It was in bright light outside and simply did not like it. Each evening when I went to water it already had some but was very wilted. So I brought it in doors and presto.. it does not wilt now. When instructions for plants say 'full sun', or bright light then here in the tropics it does not apply because the sun is hotter. The same for any country, full sun in the North is far weaker than in the south. Let any plant tell you what it is happy with. If it wilts it needs more shade....See MoreFavorite Way to Start Coleus Cuttings-For Coleus Lovers!
Comments (21)Does anyone know why cuttings curl up (and out of the water) when potted in water? I just made my cuttings yesterday and the stems all curled up when I checked on them this afternoon. Each cutting was placed on a separate can of water and water was filled until it covered a little above the lowest nodes. In addition to the curled stems, the leaves also seem to be curling a bit. Does anyone know what's happening to my cuttings? Are they wilting or dying? What should I do to save them or keep them healthy. Please help! Thank you in advance....See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
