Armstrong's new(ish) Performance Plus engineered wood flooring
Comments (3)I went in a flooring store and the armstrong performance plus did not pass my key scratch test. the armstrong lifetime floors (engineered and hardwood versions) were better than performance plus under my key scratch test. what surprised me was the strand bamboo engineered and strand bamboo staple / nail down flooring made by eco something in the usa. wow I think I will consider strand bamboo for my kitchen open to living room now. im tired of my oak floors which are scratched and dented and the rough edges catch my socks....See MoreRefinishing Hardwood Flooring Vs. New Engineered Wood Flooring
Comments (3)Even without knowing the kind of wood or condition, I can't imagine replacing wood flooring in an 1890 home. In my opinion, the value is in the original material. If the floor is in good condition, it may not need sanding at all; a screening and recoat might be all that's necessary and the patina would be retained. There are many threads on this topic, try searching the Old House forum. I live in a converted schoolhouse built in 1890. The fir floors had been covered with layers of linoleum, glue, paint ... they were a mess.. but looked awesome after refinishing. That was years ago and I'm planning to have them screened soon (aka buff and recoat.) What kind of wood is it? Do you have photos?...See MoreFlooring for new house, Hallmark brand engineered wood ?
Comments (2)I know how you feel! I'm also going through the search, but have more time than you. To make a choice, you have to establish some criteria that you want or don't want. The top of my list is no Chinese made products, so I'm only looking at USA or Canadian sourced and manufactured engineered wood floors. That really narrows down the list quite a bit for me. I also have dogs and you just have to accept that scratches will happen and you will get some patina. It sounds like you want a lighter color, which should help with the the foot/paw prints. A matte finish is also supposed to show less of that, but I found the matte to be too dull looking for me. I am looking at some with a very light gloss, around 20%, which gives it just a bit of sparkle, but should have some of the benefits of less prints, compared to a high gloss floor....See MoreNew floors, doors and trim: engineered hardwood? white or wood doors?
Comments (6)IMO real wood and fake wood are never good together so i would just do the same floor as the FR everywhere. The doors if solid fir are probably better than any cheap door you will find so why not just refinish and paint them it will add to the character of the home.As for wood or paint that I would need to see your space to comment. This is a 1905 house where we replaced all the crown that had been removed and I apinted all the wood work white we removed and sold almost all the original fir doors but kept the bathroom one and just stripped and painted it too . The front and back doors had been replaced before we bought. BTW all the floors were different so we did good quality Greman laminate all over....See MoreMy House
