Cottage Curb Appeal!
Comments (41)I think a deep grape-purple front door would look great! Have you tried mocking it up using something like Photoshop? I find that a handy way to try out options - much easier than repainting things with a brush several times! I wouldn't be so keen on the picket fence - but that's partly because it's not part of the common venacular around here. I like the sweep of green but understand the urge to reduce the amount of lawn. I think, with a house with as much presence as yours, you should have an overall plan for what you want to achieve before you start putting things in piece-meal....See MoreWill this landscape plan repair the curb appeal after house addition?
Comments (113)Thanks Yardvaark. The original pic at top of thread was in mid construction so of course it was not welcoming -- very ugly it was (or perhaps you were referring to the original house with white siding that had overgrown burning bush that obscured the circle pavers). Either way the result is an improvement for sure. I am very glad we decided from the good advice on this thread not to do plantings around the circle entry courtyard as I like how open it is now with just a garden around the birch (future garden that is). emmarene, We are definitely still doing the glass railing around the deck over the garage. We just have not got that done yet. That will really finish off the outside....See MoreBrick cottage needs curb appeal help!
Comments (35)The bushes do not need to just be pruned down. They need to be pared down such that they do not look like a freighter ready to steam off toward the left. And end undercutting so lower foliage could be kept. They could be dome, not a ball. It could be difficult to recreate into a nice form without a hole or scar as some at left side need to be entirely removed. "I plan landscaping the sides of the sidewalk with something low maintenance." Well, that in and of itself is not a low maintenance idea. At this point we don't know what the "something" is, but if it has much of any height, it's going to make the entry experience substantially less appealing, and the drive by experience less appetizing. Lining the walk with Liriope would be an example of adding negativity. It would be creating a raised edge that shrinks the apparent walk size and divides it from the larger path (lawn) with a trip hazard....See MoreNarrow Side Yard Needs Cottage Feel to add Curb Appeal and Privacy
Comments (1)Even narrow evergreens will take up quite a bit of what little space there is, arborvitae might be ok if there are smaller types. I'd consider a nice fence along which to plant some perennials. Edit the messy looking stuff in front of the house, maybe put a hydrangea or japanese maple on the right side. It looks like a lot of shade, so it may be worth getting a garden design person to consult for an hour. I would not do shutters, the windows are too close together, IMO....See MoreLinda
