Growing roses in the right place; Nur Mahal?
Comments (5)I agree with Ann in regards to poor clones. Nur Mahal is a rose that has to be a good clone as the main bloodline is a very old hybrid tea which would also mean it appreciates richer conditions. Also it is a bit of a myth that all Hybrid Musks will do well in the shade. Penelope is considered the best one for shade, then Buff Beauty, Prosperity, Cornelia, and Francesca. But if the clone is a poor one you are asking a lot of the rose. If a nursery doesn't know the difference between a good example and a poor one when it comes to propagating, you won't get the beauties or strengths of the rose. Even using a tired bud in budding will make for a poor performer. If I have a rose that does poorly for three years, it is replaced with the same and so many times the new one performs much better. Don't put up with a rose that annoys you. You wouldn't tolerate a person who irritated you!...See MoreRoses grown for their foliage, thorns or unique attributes
Comments (37)Sherry, I think that refers to rootstock suckers. If you cut them off it's like pruning the rootstock suckering growth, which is invigorated and grows back more enthusiastically than before. I'm glad you like the sound of R. gallica 'Splendens': it is a handsome creature. Mine has started suckering (top growth) in the last year or two, and perhaps I'll be able to get a bit of it and plant it somewhere a bit more accessible than its current position. I have a notion that some of these Asian jungle giants are just not adapted to our garden conditions. I've failed with R. laevigata, and 'Cooper's Burmese' is puny. Both of these could be just poor siting and site preparation, too. I mourn our lack of big trees able to support humongous climbers. Melissa...See MoreUnique, different or down right odd names
Comments (33)I am hesistant to name these two names but here goes. I hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes. Well, this particular name is in my husband's family. His niece named her little girl,(I think it is horrid) "Lacey". I think it sounds like a call girl or something. Poor little girl. I think it will limit her career wise but that may be my narrow minded thinking. Then a woman I knew named her daughter Pepper after this detective woman program back in the 60's or 70's. I don't remember the show. I must have been tuned into the rival channel. LOL. I remember my son use to ask her where's the Salt?, Pepper. I would reprimand him for it. I don't know if he ever quit. I did think that was rather odd name, though. LOL...See MorePinkerbell What a mess!
Comments (29)It is super vigorous here, not a speck of black spot, with candelabra full of bud canes, BUT once the blooms get to the exhibition stage strange things happen. Colors get muddy, petals go wonky, and for the sake of beauty in the rose bed, an early dead heading is in order just when a normal flowering rose bush has days of beauty left in a bloom at the same stage. Dig it out? If it had additional faults, probably, but it is just too vigorous and persistently pushing out blooms to go that route, so when a bloom gets nasty, dead heading is next, that solves its problem nicely. And yes, the name choice is 'juvenile.' Moses...See Morebayarea_girl_z10a_ca
