Open living/kitchen space design help!

I have a large rectangular living/kitchen space that I am renovating and need some help with the layout. There is a laundry/pantry area next to the kitchen that can potential be opened up to be part of layout as well. Any suggestion would be appreciated!

We'd love to help, but we need more information. For example, we really need a fully-measured and labeled layout of the spaces under consideration (in you case, Kitchen, Laundry, Pantry). "Fully-measured" means the widths of each wall/window/door/doorway and the distances between each wall/window/door/doorway. Window/door/doorway measurements should include trim. Indicate where doors/doorways go.

Then, please post a sketch of the entire floor so we can see how the Kitchen relates to the rest of the home and how traffic flows in, around, and through the Kitchen. Indicate where the family entrance (usually a garage entry) and guest entry (usually a front entry) are. The sketch doesn't have to be exactly to scale, but it should show room relationships and what all the rooms are.

You have a good start with what you posted above, it just needs a few additional measurements so all spaces are labeled and, either on the same sketch or a separate, ensuring all rooms on the floor are fully represented.

In addition, could you please tell us a bit about you and your family and how the space is to be used. For example,
- Do you have children (now or planned)? Are you an empty nester? Younger adults with no children planned?
- Do you entertain a lot? Formal? Informal?
- Is the Pantry the room below the Laundry/Utility room? (It's not identified)
- Other than the walls for the Laundry/Utility and Pantry, can anything else be changed? Windows, doors/doorways, etc.?
- I don't see a Dining Room on your drawing, is there one somewhere or does this Kitchen have to include a Dining Room?
We're not being nosy, this information is useful in designing a Kitchen for you, specifically.

It would be possible to put a play corner in the first two drawings but not in alternative 2. I would recommend a corner of storage furniture to corral the toys. I am usually a fan of built-ins but not in this case because eventually the kids will outgrow their toys and you won't need that storage there anymore. The built-in exception would be a window seat under one of those windows on the plans. Some of the storage could be cabinets or bookshelves for bins or toys underneath a window seat. I'm not a fan for toy box style storage because they either become a black hole or the kids throw everything out of them looking for what they want and then do't put the rest of it back. As for the kitchen placement, near to the deck would be best in you like to eat outdoors on the deck or entertain on the deck. We entertain a lot and the kitchen is on the other side of the house from the patio. It's a real pain and a big part of my design brief for the architect was for the kitchen to be next to the patio. I even wanted a pass-through window from the kitchen sink to the patio for ease of clean up but unfortunately I wasn't able to work that out.

I love the Besta System fro IKea for these situations you can cover that whole wall with a place for the Tv some storage some display and run it all along that wall and include a buffet in the DR with art above it.You can literally put pices together to totally be your personl choice , it comes in different colors this pic is just one of 100s of configurations

Although you have a lot of natural light during the day, you need to plan for good kitchen lighting at night. I would put recessed lights in at least the kitchen area, along all the outer areas the the island. Skip island pendents due to your beams, and just use a hanging fixture over your dining table. You can have more ambient light in the living area, with wall sconces built into the storage areas. Add a floor plug so you can have a floor lamp next to the sofa. I don't understand the kitchen at all. Your sink only has one open side, so you're putting dirty and clean dishes in the same place? And the dishwasher seems like it's in the island with the stove? Move the stove to the outer wall so you can have a regular vent, and put the sink in the middle of the island so it's usable. Put the refrigerator on one of the ends of the cabinet run where it's better accessible.

The kitchen counter can actually have bar chairs and I would like to do that if space allows. The current owner had the sectional right up to the kitchen counter and I do NOT want to do that. Where is a better place for the tv than over the fireplace or should I keep it there? See pictures and dimensions of my sectional that I will use in the space.
