Any last minute comments about our kitchen design?
Comments (36)I'd still do seating on two sides - as I mentioned b/f, 4 seats - like ducks sitting all in a row in a shooting gallery - are not very conducive to friendly meals together. I strongly recommend reducing the island to allow seating on two sides. It's not like your island is so small that you cannot afford the space. However, it's your Kitchen and you're the one who has to live with it, not me, so if you're OK with it, then go ahead. Whatever you do with the seating, add a prep sink to the island to make it useful as something more than a place to eat. BTW...the last layout you posted has a much better layout than what you started with in the first post. Any idea why the layout in the first post is more than 2' off? If it's the "Kitchen Guy's" measurements, talk to him ASAP about the measurements! Also, perimeters are 25.5" deep each, not 24". Base cabinet boxes are 24" deep - that's without the doors/drawer fronts and without counters. Given the new measurements... Assuming the island is in front of the refrigerator like in your original layout: 25.5" Sink counter + 48" aisle b/w sink counter and island + 100"W island + 48" aisle b/w island and refrigerator + 33.5"D refrigerator + 1" air clearance behind the refrigerator (required per installation instructions) =============================== 256"--> 6" more than what you have If you go with this one -- I recommend reducing the island by at least 6" to provide a 48" aisle b/w the refrigerator and the island. Since it's a busy aisle, consider more for a wider aisle so it's not a bottleneck when the refrigerator is open. If the refrigerator is completely offset from the island: 25.5" Sink counter + 48" aisle b/w sink counter and island + 100"W island + 51" aisle b/w island & ref wall counters (3" for a bit more diagonal room b/w island & ref) + 25.5.5"D refrigerator wall counters =============================== 250" So - you need to completely offset the refrigerator. ....See MoreKitchen Design- Working on flow for our new build
Comments (11)Yes, some people DO put all their dishes in their bottom drawers. BUT...it depends on how many dishes one has, how many pots and pans and baking dishes one has, and how big the kitchen is. There is NO WAY I could have put anything other than the 8 outdoor use only plates in the bottom drawers as I have a LOT of dishes - they cannot even all be held in the kitchen - huge corner cupboard in the breakfast room that holds multiple sets. I did a blind corner cabinet and used it for all my good glassware. It's great to have that space back to the wall for more of the same glasses (I have 12 each of different shapes but rarely use more than 5-6). It is valuable storage space for me. In fact, my one regret in my kitchen remodeling was that I let the KD talk me out of having my sink unit have a blind corner cabinet with one shelf. I had one before and stored all my extra paper towels back there and loved it. Now, it means a trip to the basement for them. YOU know your kitchen equipment better than anyone. You will find people on GW who will tell you than have service for 6 that all fits on one or two shelves with no cabinet, and own 2 sauce pans and 2 skillets and no baking pans. Well, that's just great for them, but I like all my kitchen stuff and other than parting with the paella plates and the escargot plates and equipment (which I hadn't used in decades), I kept pretty much everything. Okay - not the multiple heart shaped pans - they went. But it's my kitchen and I won't allow the kitchen police to shame me into getting rid of everything....See MorePlease help us decide on our new kitchen design!!
Comments (6)I think I found some more measurements in one of your previous posts, but there are others missing. (edited picture-arrow no 2) Green circled are from [this[(https://www.houzz.com/discussions/updated-kitchen-design-options-any-thoughts-help-please-dsvw-vd~4704417) post (please check them). Orange circled are the ones you provided (assuming two written in red show the current kitchen peninsula). Please give the measurements of the other walls marked 1 thru 7....See MoreNew Kitchen Design/Remodel...Needing Expert Advice
Comments (5)No one can help you plan the space without measurements of all walls, doors, windows, appliance locations, etc. and your budget. I second the advice to live with it for a while. It will help establish your priorities for the new space, other than to get new cabinets and countertops....See MoreBT
