Propagating Swedish Ivy - Help!

I was just given some Swedish Ivy cuttings and for whatever reason I'm extremely on edge about propagating them. I don't have a ton of propagating experience in general.

When they were given to me, the woman said that some of them were rooting, some of them weren't. She just stuck them in a pot. I'm too nervous to pull them out of the pot to investigate, because they're already kind of soft and lilty.

Should I go out and get rooting hormone and restart the process? Will they be fine and probably start rooting on their own? I watered them through and put them in a plastic bag in indirect light to create a mini greenhouse effect. Any advise is welcome! I have wanted Swedish Ivy for a while, which is why I'm so nervous about this working out!

Relax. This is one of the easiest of plants to propagate. Just keep them watered and be patient.

Agree with floral - they root really easy. Snip and stick in soil. Water and keep it out of direct Sunlight. I save a pot each Fall with many cuttings and then in early Summer I make many cuttings out of them and stick them all around the yard. Just do not keep watering them - the soft stems will rot.

@pirate girl, if you didn't want to answer her, you could of opted out, and just explained how things worked! or left it alone PERIOD! i've been on here long enough to know how things work and that NOT EVERYONE is as RUDE and INCONSIDERATE as you Were! you definitely need to learn some manners! for reasons of this is why some members are leaving! and seeking out other places..Maybe she didn't know that if she clicks on the little box at the end, then she would get messages to her email...Hmmm how simple to just say that?!! Geeze!! However, on the "sweedish ivy" i have heard of a "creeping charlie" house plant that is like our sweedish ivy, but not like it, it is much more hardy, and much thicker. more like between the jade and sweedish ivy. its really weird... LOL But Very Beautiful! i seen it when we were in Germany..

@tiffany - lol, same here! Maybe Key West and a perfectly shaded porch so I don't have to run outside every few hours to move everyone around so they don't get sunburned :) I can dream, right ? And that link is very helpful! Right now I have a massive rainbow club moss just hanging out in there while I try to figure it what to do with her....(another "help me" post in the making). @karen - I can't tell you how much I appreciate your input. I fall in love and bring a plant home, spend a little time with it - then it drops a leaf or starts drooping and I get panicky as a new mother. And that's helpful about the alocasia because I think mine are moving toward that state. Should I leave them alone or prune later in the fall ? @jamila - you should totally get one! I hear they're easy care ;p

It will come back. Swedish Ivy is like wandering jews. They become unattractive 3 or more times a year and are just in need of being cut back nice and hard. It will grow back lusher and fuller than it was before. That said, the plant must be in decent light from an east or west window or very near a north window. The leaves of this plant get a bit dull looking when it's time to water. In summer, the plant wants water because it is actively growing and needs more water, in winter when it's barely growing or growing less, the same water you give in summer will kill the plant, because it cannot use it up as it could when growing more. You really do have to watch the plant to let it tell you how long you can go between waterings. So, you picked a good plant to experiment on, as these will regrow pretty quickly. Good luck.

Hi all, I have Plectranthus Purpuratus (Purple Swedish Ivy) and I placed it indoor, near a big door that faces a balcony. The balcony is Australian south facing. It is still bright but no direct sunlight. The ivy was thriving, but in the last few weeks it has developed brown spots and now the leaves are not are hard anymore. They are very lumpy and turning yellow. I attached a few pics below. Not sure if it’s because of the (lack of) direct sunlight or overwatering. I heard it’s very easy to grow his plant indoors. So, any tips are appreciated! I really don’t want to kill this gorgeous purple beauty! :(

one of you says keep watering.. the other says not to ... lol ...

insert finger in pot.. and find out when they need water ... do not overwater .... and presuming your pot has a drain hole.. its probably not an issue ... do let the pot dry out a bit.. before you water again ...

since they dont have a great root mass ... you do need to provide enough water ... without loving them to death with too much water ...

if you placed them in a baggie.. open at the top.. it might help create a zone iof higher humidity ... which might help ... i see now.. you did that.. good ... done

if you can post a pic.. that might help also ... what do you mean.. yours are soft and lilty ???

there is no reason to start over.. with rooting hormones ...

It was not my intention to disagree with floral on watering but it certainly looks so. What I wanted to convey was not to keep it constantly wet by repeated watering. They root easily and like most other plants roots will find it easier to grow and spread if the mix in not saturated with water.

I didn't say 'keep watering', Ken, I said 'keep watered' which is not the same thing at all.

Hi Julianne,

Pls try to calm down, this is not as complex as you seems to think it needs to be, tho' I hear that you're new to propagating.

As others have said these root very easily. Even if one just puts a few cuttings in a small cup of water, they'll root in no more than 2 weeks time, then one can pot them up.

How you've done it is just fine as well, just give it time & try to be patient. New leaves will be the indicator that rooting has happened.
