What town should we move to in Southern Me.?
Comments (69)Hello PF... Since you are on target for this summer, have you decided on a town? I just discovered this post, because I always wanted to move to Maine too. I guess we are all looking for the perfect place and at least for me, I am sure I tend to romanticize it. I think I developed my sense of 'Maine' from books that I read growing up mixed together with a little dash of trips to Maine. :-) Then when our children were small, I seemed to keep finding books for children set in Maine and that just kept the dream alive. lol Blueberries for Sal for some reason sticks in my memory. I have a feeling that the Maine I imagine, doesn't exist any more, if it ever did. I would love the opportunity to visit Maine more and hopefully find that at least some of my imaginings about Maine are on target. I enjoyed reading about the different towns in Maine that have some of the qualities you are looking for. Great thread. :-)...See MoreSS daily Monday,Oct 4 to Sunday, Oct 10
Comments (56)Hi golis! Well, alrighty, then. The police were over there all night last night and well into the afternoon. Let me explain how the apts are set up: they are like ranch houses that are connected to each other, sorta like a duplex. The immediate next door neighbors were friendly with the lady--I've seen them going back and forth to each other's place, so that makes the next chapter even more bizarre. We get home about 6PM tonight, and so help me; my hand up, the murdered lady's immediate next door neighbors were having a loud racous party out in the common area, in front of the victims' apt ***WITH*** the police tape still up, the crime scene techs still running around, the coroner's office there, and several officers present. I thought I had completely lost my mind, but I have 2 fully sober witnesses to it, or even **I** wouldn't have believed it, and I'm standing there with my jaw on my chest. O.M.G. WTF is wrong with peeps now days? There's evidence/biohazard bags all over the place, and the kids are playing within several feet of them. A bloody mattress is (was) standing in the patio area, and peeps are eating and playing cards nearby. I am truly stunned. Where is that deserted island????????? (2 local TV channels tried to interview me, but I wouldn't, and we're supposed to go down to the police station and give a statement) (OH--I almost forgot--I was talking to my next door lady, and she was home on Tues, with her windows open, and she told me that she heard **everything**, but thought it was a screaming match between a couple. She didn't call the police, but did get suspicious when she saw the grandson taking out armloads of 'stuff'. She was bawling this morning b/c she told me that she will forever hear the screams and think that if she had called the police, one of them might have lived. Bless her heart--she's a good lady, and I feel so sorry for her--what a thing to live with.)...See MoreWhat are we reading in August?
Comments (132)Yesterday I finished There There by Tommy Orange. It's been getting great reviews and has been on the NY Times bestseller list all summer. However, for me, it was a difficult read. Orange is clearly a talented author, writing about the plight of urban/contemporary Native Americans. However, there are 12 main characters, each chapter about a different one, moving back and forth in time as well as constantly shifting characters. For me, it was impossible to keep track of them as well as the secondary characters. For instance, the character in chapter 1 might not be mentioned again for another 10 chapters and by then, I've forgotten his/her backstory. The story is leading up to a point where all the characters attend a "pow wow" in Oakland but I was just skimming at that point b/c I couldn't even remember the backstory for each character. Unfortunate, because so little fiction is written about this culture and I was looking forward to it. Up next is something that is supposed to be a light read, The Lido by Libby Page. I also have After Anna by Lisa Scottoline. I have so many anticipated books in my pile right now I'm having a hard time trying to decide! And I'm still listening to Americanah and enjoying that but it is very long!...See MoreRetirement in FL? (Not to be Stereotypical... but we get it now)
Comments (47)It's funny because I live "outdoors" a lot more when I go down to Florida than I do up North - because of the giant lanai! I can spend all day outside by the pool. Up North the mosquitoes just keep me miserable almost all hours of the day. My inlaws live in an HOA (golf community) and I'm sure they must spray because the bugs really aren't bad outside at all. Not sure about the pesticide implications for human health. I only visited Sarasota once in the summer (July) and yes it was hot, but AC everywhere, gorgeous beach weather and cooling rains every afternoon were nice for me. It was maybe 95-100 highs but it was mid-80s the whole time I was down just now in February anyway! Up in Nova Scotia it only gets that hot for a week or two in the summer, but few people have AC so it ends up being a lot more unbearable. At your price you might be able to get a canal-side home if you want to be near the water. I'd love that, but of course with it comes flooding consideration. My inlaws happily come home in April: they prefer the snowbird life....See Morecaflowerluver
