How to improve curb appeal? (photos)
Comments (15)Peanut I am in Idaho to and we have had our first and second third frosts so the trees are turning fast . I totally understand the brown leaves. Our true front of th house faces side way like yours is. What is the front really is the end. I am wondering how much set back you might have left to play with on that end of your house with missing window? I do know some times you might get your hand slapped for changing structure as in adding a window in a manufactured home. Be sure to check before you do it. I was kind of thinking if you had room for a little covered porch on the end.Might help the blank look. We have a blank spot on our true front side because I had them move the master bedroom windows to the gable end of the house. Idaho has many growing zones. We are in Midvale so zone 4 but sometimes zone five. I have several trees here and the Scotch Pines grow really fast and are kind of wild and pretty. Not sure if you have room. Can you get a picture further back from your house? Might be easier to give you ideas if more could be seen. Chris...See MoreHow to improve curb appeal? Clay Roof?
Comments (45)A clay roof would be so charming here! A metal roof could look really good too, it's also common on stucco homes in the southwest. IDK, but it might be easier to maintain too. If you went that route, I'd recommend terra cotta, dark brown, or maybe even blue. (Or if you're made of money, a copper roof and let it turn green.) I have a metal roof and one lesson I learned is that it's super hard to get a vendor willing to install anything -- nobody wants to be responsible for cutting into it. You might run into the same issue with clay. So if you think you will need to add skylights, roof vents, etc, have it done when the roofers are there!...See MoreSuggestions for how to improve the curb appeal of this house?
Comments (10)Thank you all so much! I did add a picture of our house with the garage door closed. We live in Michigan, and I should mention that we will be replacing the concrete stoop and sidewalk. It seems like a great time to nail down a good design before we commit to new concrete. Your structural suggestions and pictures are inspiring. The point about using the landscape to hide and highlight is precisely what we've been thinking. I'll be reaching out to an architect and landscape designer very soon. We welcome any additional suggestions. Thanks again!...See MoreHow to improve the curb appeal in my house?
Comments (12)I figured their landscaping is minimal because they're working parents. Or they're just not into gardening which is also cool. The basic issues I have with the hollies are a lack of interest because only one type of plant is used, the dense planting which creates a heavy "eyebrow" look and the height of the shrubs reaching the window sills. For an easy DIY update, I'd remove the hollies on the far left (shady) side and replace with azaleas. Space the azaleas five feet apart and five feet out from the foundation. Yes, you'll be able to see the foundation between them. Your house is lovely and you've got nothing to hide;) Next, remove the hollies between the front door and the tall guy. Choose a smaller flowering shrub like Drift roses or spirea to plant there. Again, plant the new shrubs five feet off the foundation and five feet apart. Add liriope and flowering annuals in front of the roses. Shorten the tall guy by two feet and prune it into a denser cone. When you plant the new shrubs, don't spread bark mulch around them. Wood mulches may attract termites. Use river rock along the foundation and compost (like the bagged Black Kow brand sold at Home Depot) around the shrubs. Leave the remaining span of hollies in place until you install the sidewalk....See Moreshwshw
