Design Direction Advice - which would you rather?
Comments (18)I haven't read all the responses, but I would start by going to the tile stores and see what jumps out at you. if you fall in love with a tile, that can be your jumping off point. When we redid the hall/kids/guest bath I had seen a picture of a brightly tiled bath of Villeroy and Boch tiles. They are individual 8x8 squares of ocean blue, butterscotch, apple green, and white. I debated because of the " not easy to change" factor but decided to go for it. It's a small bath and I did the floor, tub surround and halfway up the wall. It's the boldest thing in the house. Six years later I still like it......it's a cheerful room without being cutesy.....suitable for both kids and adult guests. ( I did not add the tile flower border that coordinated with the field tiles). I do sometimes worry about resale, but most likely a family with kids would buy this house and most kids' baths have bright colors in some form. When we redid the master bath I knew I wanted a natural maple vanity. After that the jumping point was the accent tile I found...everything fell into place after that. You can also look at Houzz or magazines and if you see a bath you like try to duplicate the elements....See MoreExterior refresh- which direction to go??!!
Comments (12)Ha, Spanish wannabe. Yes! A little self-reflection has determined that I’ve really miscommunicated myself here. i Know I can’t have a modern house, or a farm house, or another house that isn’t some version of this house. I’m totally ok with that. Let me try again. I can paint.. I have 10 color schemes to choose from that go from white/dark brown trim to monotone dark brown.. I can remove brackets, or stone veneer. I can change the lighting, doors. Some neighbors have totally enclosed their patios, reconfiguring their entrances. So, I found this builder Prodigy Homes and I like their homes- they’re a unique take on the stucco tract house, and I see my house in them (or what it could be). I’ve thought I wanted to go the more modern route like the First photo. But I really like the second photo too, with the cedar entry. So I started thinking maybe I could add cedar to my house somehow, and that’s where this post is coming from. How could I add cedar to my house In a way that makes sense? I‘m not talking about a 100k remodel. Simple changes. Like, could I add cedar panels on the entry somehow? Or larger cedar brackets on the front? That kind of stuff. Budget is flexible- if I really want to do something, I‘ll find the money. For the sake of discussion, let’s say $15k....See MoreHelp with Direct Vent Fireplace Design Dilemma
Comments (8)Thank you- a lot of the images I’m finding I can not tell how far the fireplace is protruding, especially if the the photo is taken straight on. The one from RES shows it really clearly. So hard for me to visualize it but this helps a lot. Great advice about preventing cobweb invasion!...See MoreExterior Paint Color for house with direct western sun exposure?
Comments (0)We have a light gray stucco colonial home in sunny Florida that gets tons of direct HOT sunlight from the west in the afternoons and evenings. It's time to repaint and we are stuck on the color scheme. We both dislike the current gray color and anything in the cream/beige/tan/brown family. My husband would like a green/teal/blueish color but everything we've tried looks so washed out and faded in the afternoon sun. The darker colors that work well in the afternoon sun look took dark in the shade in the back of our home (in my opinion). I also worry darker colors would fade with all that direct western exposure (with no large trees nearby). What is the general rule for west facing homes? Should we stick with white or a lighter color or is a deeper saturation better so it doesn't look washed out?...See MoreCreative Visual Concepts, Kevin Strader
