What kind of grass

I have lived in this house for nearly 8 years, and still the yard look "green" with "grasses".

I live about 20 miles east of Raleigh on the edge of the Piedmont plateau.

In the last few years I have noticed a grass that is planted at the edge of the road, a long parkways, Trails, etc. that looks good, and seems to grow into a relatively nice lawn, with nearly no maintenance. There are several areas of this grass on the Neuse River parkway, near Covered bridge road.

Does any one know what type of grass the governments uses in these applications, and where it can be purchased.

Are you seeing this up close. Is it grass. Even from 15 feet anyway, sprawling spans of green weeds look pretty damm nice compared to dormant grass from a distance

In Texas the state plants something called King Ranch bluestem or KR bluestem. Well, maybe they don't plant it, but it is literally everywhere. When I moved to Bandera, Texas in 2014 I didn't see any. Now it is everywhere. The fringe of my lawn still has some, but the St Augustine seems to stamp it out (like almost all other grasses). I would not be at all surprised that KR bluestem has reached the Raleigh area (is that one of the Carolinas??). It looks fine for maybe 2 weeks after mowing, but once it send up a seed head, it jumps to about 18 inches tall overnight. I've never walked on it barefoot, but I suspect the clipped off seed stems are hard on the foot. It does not get very dense, either.

What is a bio retention area in this instance? Is it a septic field? Or an area that floods regularly but is planted? Carex pensylvanica AKA Pennsylvania sedge isn’t happy in areas that flood though there are other sedges that are happy with wet feet. Where are you? It won’t be happy in all parts of the US. Here is its native US range. https://plants.usda.gov/core/profile?symbol=cape6 Carex pensylvanica (note spelling only has one n at the beginning) doesn’t like flooding IME and as Jan Moyer said, it will need watering if in full sun as most septic fields are, as well as during the establishment phase regardless. It will also need removal of any woody weeds such as blackberry bushes and maple seedlings a couple of times a year since mowing (the typical way to control woody plants in field areas) doesn’t improve appearance. I have a fairly extensive stand growing native on my property and really like it, though due to poor soil and no watering, it isn’t as lush as the photo above.

Looks like annual rye ....or some type of winter annual. Either way, it will die off in the heat. You can get rid of it quicker by shutting the water off for a couple of weeks and mowing short. The "water starvation" will not harm the bermuda.

my guess was creeping bentgrass too, and thanks Iawniac I didn't know tenacity controls it because pretty sure Drive XLR8 doesn't. if it were zoysia then the was zoysia there before and its tough roots system stayed alive even though you overseeded cool season grasses. If you're lucky the zoysia will eventually choke everything out and give you full zoysia (it's super dense and drought resistant but it'll go dormant brown very quick in Canada, goes dormant so quick that it should have been all brown weeks ago there and you'd not have pics of green blades), looks too stringy and thin to be zoysia anyway my guess is still creeping bentgrass or similar. Do a google image search of creeping bentgrass and scroll to see similar pics of the plants pulled out like yours. CBG is a perrennial so maybe you can live with it, it should fill in dense too, so dense I just read some putting greens use it but those are mowed very often to create a tight nit and also would need lots of water to cut anything that low without killing it.

Yes,miscanthus. And there are many varieties. Do your homework. Ideally they look best if cut back in early spring before new growth begins. Not completely "carefree" but beautiful .
