It's always hard to tell when it's that spriggy and just coming back, but it looks like a low-quality fescue. Maybe. I'm not great at this.

If you can find one that's better grown-in, with the tips, that would help with further ID.

Zoysia (spelling?) or perhaps Bermuda grass ...

thanks for the reply! I did a search on both of those and it does look like zoysia to me but I am confused as from what I read it is normally planted via plugs or sod? I've grown my lawn by just seeding and overseeding every year. could this still be zoysia?

I do know that it is invasive so if your neighbor has it or even if you started with a small patch (unbeknownst) it will spread.

Nimblewill or Bentgrass, I'm not sure. Both can be controlled with Tenacity.

thank you both for the replies. I don't think this is anything new in my lawn and I am usually pretty happy with how the lawn looks for the most part. is there any reason to get rid of this? I live in Canada so I am unable to get tenacity. thanks again!

my guess was creeping bentgrass too, and thanks Iawniac I didn't know tenacity controls it because pretty sure Drive XLR8 doesn't.

if it were zoysia then the was zoysia there before and its tough roots system stayed alive even though you overseeded cool season grasses. If you're lucky the zoysia will eventually choke everything out and give you full zoysia (it's super dense and drought resistant but it'll go dormant brown very quick in Canada, goes dormant so quick that it should have been all brown weeks ago there and you'd not have pics of green blades), looks too stringy and thin to be zoysia anyway my guess is still creeping bentgrass or similar. Do a google image search of creeping bentgrass and scroll to see similar pics of the plants pulled out like yours. CBG is a perrennial so maybe you can live with it, it should fill in dense too, so dense I just read some putting greens use it but those are mowed very often to create a tight nit and also would need lots of water to cut anything that low without killing it.

I would not worry about it.

It's probably not a fast-growing-in-Summer type of weed like crabgrass which can quickly make the lawn look unkept and need more frequent mowing. Both bentgrass and crabgrass will choke out and kill existing turf but what you have looks so similar to common turf grass, and luckily it's spreading and filling in on its own, reducing the chance for faster-growing weeds to fill in otherwise thinner areas of lawn.

if they allow glyphosate there, you can basically kill your whole lawn or the patches with that weed and seed from scratch but probably too late in season now but sod would work.

Tenacity if you can get similar, doesn't list bentgrass as a sort of easy-to-kill weed, it has a special paragraph just for bentgrass saying you'll basically have to spray it 3 times, waiting about 3 weeks between applications. So, might be too late for this Fall growing season.
