looking for help with cabinet placement in small kitchen
Comments (8)I also have an extremely similar layout---where you have a high pantry, we have a doorway, and our high pantry is next to the dishwasher where you have the cabinet, but otherwise, same footprint. A few thoughts: - I use the counter between the stove and sink more than any other space, and am *so* glad we gave that some extra inches. Ours is 24" blind corner in the L, then a 27" cabinet, then a 36" stove, then an 18" cabinet. This seems to be a really good arrangement thus far. I worried it would look unbalanced, but it's fine. - We have a 48" landing zone where yours is with a single-door fridge opening towards the counter. So far I like this (it's actually our old fridge and we're still debating between a french door and single door for the new one, but I'm leaning towards single door right now). The landing zone gets a huge amount of use, though ironically not as the "baking center" I'd envisioned for that space. (Instead, I find I do all the baking tasks in the section between stove and sink---more convenient.) Absolutely would want landing space there. - We have a full-height pantry where the cabinet to the left of the dishwasher is in your plan; ours is built into the framing of our house so it wasn't going anywhere, but I actually like having it there. Ours is a cooler so I keep flours/nuts/oils and fruit/veggies in there; handy to have them a little closer to the cooking space than the fridge. We keep bread/cereal/snacks/etc. in the cabinets by the fridge, though, which is super useful since that counter gets used for making lunches or getting a snack or drink---things that typically don't need to be washed or cooked. Generally, we're pretty happy with the space we have---the only thing it seems to be missing is some storage for dishes that I'm currently trying to figure out, but since we don't have uppers on the sink/range walls (just on the fridge wall) I think you're all set on that front. HTH!...See MoreMicrowave placement
Comments (12)I am 5'2" and our MW is a GE Profile PEM31SFSS Profile 1.1 Cu. Our MW is in an upper cabinet, 18.5 inches over the 36 inch high counter. The cabinet is 16 inches deep, inset. 15 would have been fine, 14 would have been tight, but one could cut into the wall behind the cabinet perhaps? We don't use the MW much, so the height over the counter in a wall cab is fine. It would not work with little kids. Do you know what MW you want? Seems to me that is your first step. There aren't may MWs that are less than 15" deep. And, when you look at the specs, they don't include space needed to allow back side circulation or if the plug pops out the back. Also note - the Profile we have does not take a full size plate. A salad plate is fine. We haven't used it much, so no report on how good it is, but it seems strong enough for our needs. If you don't have a MW selected yet, here is one site where you can put in your specs and see what your options are http://www.goedekers.com/appliances/cooking/microwaves/browse/depth-3,5.html...See MoreMicrowave Placement - Kitchen Reno
Comments (10)Sure. I wouldn’t want a prep sink that had no space between the sink and my cooktop. It negates the convenience of a prep sink if you have to move your prepped food around multiple times. I currently cook on a peninsula cooktop that is unvented and I’m used to it, but I wouldn’t (won’t) leave it that way during a reno. I have mixed feelings about those curved island ends but that’s form and not function. The cleanup sink appears small and I’d avoid a corner sink if I could. It looks like you may have a hike to get to oven landing space which is a safety issue, but that’s difficult to make out. If you’re keeping all cabinetry I’d try to scale down the exaggerated crown of the middle cabinet over the dishwasher....See Morefinalizing Kitchen - microwave placement
Comments (16)IMO before finalizing this plan there are a few issues first never have a plan where you have to cross in fornt of the range to get to the sink from the fridge . I can bet this is a cabinet salesperson doing this design . I agree arial views are pretty useless and very often distort the space MWS do not last forever so I like them to not be in a specified space for that particular one . I like mine on the counter , its a kitchen the biggest work horse in the house why try to hide appliances you use .In this plan I would just do it next to fridge. I think you need to think about actual use of the space and walkways in front of fridges, and ranges need to be 48" min and where there is seating you need 60" All your base cabinets should be drawers IMO back to the drawing board with either help from here or an independant KD who understands the basics of good design....See More- 4 years ago
