Chamblee Roses has added new David Austin roses
Comments (7)I bought The Prince, Tradescant, GC, GST, Charlotte, Ambridge Rose, Winchester Cathedral, Glamis Castle (before reading all the bad reviews on HMF), Molineux--I realize now that I only bought nine, so maybe I'm not so bad after all. I had only meant to pick up Golden Celebration and Molineux, but one thing led to another. I used to go by Chamblees and pick up roses when I still had family in that part of Texas. It was fun to be able to pick out the roses on-site and the roses were so much more affordable and substantial than ordering from elsewhere online. They used to carry far more old roses, including bourbons and some HPs, essentially the same ones as Antique R, Emporium. I suppose it made sense to streamline their product assortment. Later on I would buy more from other nurseries with more selection, but it was at Chamblees and ARE that I first really got hooked....See Morenewb rose grower: how early to detect problems in David Austin roses?
Comments (12)All the plants have buds and Munstead Wood is the first to bloom-- 9 flowers have opened and 9 more developing. I gave them water and nothing else for weeks, then as they started getting bigger, sprinklings of bloodmeal and half-doses of fish emulsion. At some point I tried giving them a bit of diluted potassium with indeterminate results. (Maybe because I got muriate of potash instead of the potassium chloride, sulfide or whatever it is that's supposed to be better?) Once I gave them water left over from cooking beans (no salt) and they seemed to like it fine. Sorry I don't have any pictures of the whole plants yet, but they do seem like they are taking off. Though Munstead Wood, Lady of Shallot, and Jude the Obscure are growing with big open spaces between canes-- I don't know if these are the reported David Austin octopus arms, or pest damage to terminal shoots that would otherwise fill out the center of the bush, or particular growth habit in Houston, TX weather, or if it's just something it'll grow out of after a year and some pruning. The other, younger two plants that I've messed with the least, Lady Emma Hamilton and Brother Cadfael, have much more attractive foliage and look more bushy/shrubby. LEH has sixteen buds already and is nicely rounded, while BC, who has been growing tall thick canes and took the longest to leaf out and bud, looks more like a sturdy column shape. They are all at least two to three and a half feet off the soil level. So far the scent on MW is very sweet, like berry candy and rosewater (rather than dried rose petals), and seems stronger after a fish emulsion feeding. Can't wait for the others! Thanks to everyone for being present on this forum. I've been going through a lot of posts and learning a bunch!...See MoreWhich David Austin rose would look best?
Comments (37)Get a rose you're in love with.... if you're having a whole hedge of it, then you've got to love it.. ...my choice here would be without question..... 'Scarborough Fair'.. in that colour range.... I'm near the sea and it withstands the elements.... it blooms constantly, in poor soil, drought conditions and heat - such as we get it here on occasions... 3.5 tall by 4 foot wide... no issues... it should be better known really.... not double, but semi double... musk scented with hips in winter.. I think it's good for zone 5... I took this photo in blazing 100 deg .. which I don't get too much.. ...this is a late evening pic... just before dark... ...you will get that I totally love this rose... of course no one else has to like it.. but... ...hope you find something you like just as much.......See MoreDavid Austin Roses in my garden
Comments (45)Wow - beautiful roses, htracyn79! You have a great DA collection! I just picked up a Harlow Carr at a local nursery, so I was excited to see your photos, as it's relatively less common so not as well known to me. I know it's thorny, though! (I draped a towel lightly over it while transporting it in my car, and the towel stuck to the thorns, lol.)...See Morenoseometer...(7A, SZ10, Albuquerque)
