Oh, double No! I don't have the tahini anymore. This isn't going to be right. I'll toast some sesame seeds and throw them in but I doubt it'll help.

I use Asian style toasted sesame oil in hummus instead of tahini.

If you lived closer I would lend you a splash!

I have two bottles - toasted and not toasted.....and I have no idea why!

How did your stir fry turn out?

It turned out pretty good after all. I doused the finished product in my bowl with some gochujang sauce so it was still good. I did toast some sesame seeds and added it. But sesame oil is one of the main elements of this dish, can't believe I let myself not replenish my stock. I use it frequently.

Sounds yummy. Stir frys are pretty forgiving. I find they always taste different no matter which ingredients you use.

I used to buy cans of toasted sesame oil at one of the Japanese markets near me, but that was a bit of overkill. I would pour portions of it into smaller bottles that were easier to use, but I had to pay attention to the expiration dates. I do think the oil kept better in the metal cans, as it was not exposed to light. I sometimes buy olive oil in similar cans.

I buy tahini before I run out, and so I always have that on hand. After opening, I store it in the fridge, upside down. In fact, I store it upside down on the pantry shelf as well, as this makes it easier to stir it after opening.

I get nervous when I start running low on toasted sesame oil! Because I have problems finding it & usually when I do find it, it's a teeny bottle and crazy priced. When we were in Vegas, I picked up two 16 oz. containers at that Asian supermkt chain out west at a great 'on sale' price even. Gave one of them to my son and then started getting nervous because I didn't have a back-up btl! As luck would have it, I found another 16 oz container at my local Aldi, of all places. Last one on the shelf so I snapped it up and can relax for a while.

I do keep all of them stored in the refrigerator because I've read that sesame oil isn't very shelf stable.

Question...does the non-toasted sesame oil have a good flavor? How does the flavor compare to toasted? I found the non-toasted sesame oil at an Asian store in Wausau but didn't buy it....because the toasted is a critical ingredient in several dishes that I make....and that I make when I have a hankering for 'that' flavor, IYKWIM! Didn't want to chance it.

Regular sesame oil has a particular flavor the way nut oils do. It's nothing like toasted sesame oil. It's used a lot in middle eastern cooking. I use it on the pumpkin in my pumpkin lasagna. The pumpkin is cut in strips, tossed in sesame oil and roasted. It's noticeable enough that it might not please everyone, but has a savoriness that is a good foil for the general sweetness of the dish. But it's a normal cooking oil, with a bit of flavor, whereas safflower has none. Toasted sesame oil is a flavoring used judiciously, in small quantities.
