Do you have drawers instead of lower cabs? Would that work instead?

Do you have drawers? We put all our everyday dishes in a 24" drawer. We love it. I believe someone on this site cabinet maker made the wrong depths of cabinets. You may want to measure your cabinets. Are they 12"?

Is this a particular brand of cabinet?

What is the diameter of your dinner plate?

Sounds like you might need some new plates. Maybe your dinner plates are larger than normal???

What is the brand of cabinets and how deep are the interiors of the wall cabinets....from the back to the front of the front frame?

I just measured my plates (everyday ones, I think the other set is a bit bigger) everyday ones are just a smidgeon smaller than 11 inches. The inside measurement of the cabinets is 10 and 13/16. ok my measuring tape is not calibrated but that's close and I don't think it's my plates.

I do have 2 large lower drawers but, I can't open them if the DW is open. It would be very akward to use them for plates. I have a small kitchen, not sure there are any options.

Are these custom cabinets or are they from a larger manufacturer?

You have large plates. A quick trip through Crate and Barrel and Macy's websites shows most plates at 10.5". I was paying attention since I just bought new dinnerware for a family member. My bought-in-the-80's plates are 10 3/8" for the fancy ones and 10 1/8" for the Corelle breakfast and lunch set. My Lenox china is 10 1/2".
Can your KD have some slanted racks made so your plates stand at a slight angle in vertical slots? Would new dinnerware be cheaper?
Just measured my upper cabinets. 10 7/8" except I have surface mounted doors, not flush, so I get another 1/2" depth from the face frame before the door hits. Do you have inset doors that sit flush with the frames?

I just woke up and went to my new beautiful cabinets. It's a nightmare to me. Buying new plates is not a good solution as far as I'm concerned. Am I being to harsh? I paid an awful lot of money for them.

Palimpsest, the cabinets are semi-custom from Cabico. The KD said, when we were talking about other issues like the cracked veneer at many of the corners and joints (you can see the plywood beneath) that they would have anything I didn't like fixed.
Is there any chance they would make good on that promise for the size of the uppers?

They could have been ordered extra deep. You could re-order them that way but it isn't an execution issue - unless they aren't the depth they specified.

Dear nansea57, I can only imagine how frustratred you are. A good KD should have asked you to check the dimension of your plates. That said, I can't see the argument for Cabico paying to replace the uppers. In the big picture, a new set of everyday plates (less than 100 dollars?) is a drop in the bucket compared to the cost of your new kitchen. Best wishes on your reno!

10 1/2" is the "standard" for dinner plates. Those fit just fine in a standard 12" deep cabinet. Your plates are oversized. This isn't anyone's fault, exactly, except maybe the American trend towards "bigger is better". However, you had read about the problem of plates not fitting in inset cabinets, and it didn't occur to you to measure your plates or your cabinets because you weren't getting inset, so it perhaps could be your fault in the smallest way. You just assumed that your plates were standard---just like most people would--like your KD did. Your KD designed to an industry standard, so it's not her fault, although with the trend towards larger plates, perhaps she should start mentioning that to clients. It's a learning experience for both of you.

Sure, if you had known in the design phase, you could have ordered custom depth uppers (for about $80-$100+ extra per upper) but it's just easier to find you some standard depth plates for your everyday china.

Is there anyway you can set them in a rack vertically like cindaloutx suggested. They could adjust a shelf on the current cabinets to do this.

Sounds like a perfect excuse for a shopping trip and some new dishes to me :)

can you leave one cabinet doorless - or a couple for balance - for your plates? It would look like open shelving and could look very nice!

I wonder if you just read my post about two weeks ago!! I had custom cabinets installed (NOT inset) and my plates didn't fit either!! Turned out that the cabinet maker should have put the anchors on the backs differently. My standard 10.5 inche plates did not fit. They removed the cabinets, reversed the backs, and now they fit. Plates must fit in the upper cabinets, but if I had plates that were bigger than the standard, I would purchase new plates.

I guess I never even thought about this - but then again , I have always put my dishes in the upper corner cabinet. Do you have a deep corner cabinet that you can use?

I think you need to measure the outside of your cabinet.... that should be 12" ..... the inside being 10 13/16" sounds right/normal.

Hmm, my uppers are 12" on the inside. I thought that was normal, but then I only have my own kitchen as a reference point. Guess mine are the weird ones!

I'd talk with the KD but I doubt they'll replace the uppers on their dime. Getting some new everyday plates is probably your least expensive option. I'd do a little looking for ones that you really really like to make this a little more positive for you.

I had the same problem.

I put my dinner plates in a cabinet with a glass door. The glass insert is not as thick as the wood panel in the rest of the cabinet doors so it gave me the fraction of an inch that I needed. Maybe you could have the door of the cabinet modified for glass. Talk to your local glass shop, they may be able to do it for less than a cabinet company, as well as give you several options for the type of glass.

I also doubled up on the bumpers on the inside of the doors, that was enough to prevent the doors from touching the plates and "clinking" every time I shut the doors.

If you have the european style hinges, there is an adjustment for "in and out" that will make the door stand out slightly from the frame.

I have frameless Cabico cabinets delivered 4 months ago. My uppers are 13" (from wall to front of door) and my interior is 11.5" (from back to inside door). If you have the same depth as I than I think your plates are oversized.

My Kraftmaid Cabinets were 12" on the inside and 13 or 13.5 deep overall, but they were *promoted as extra deep uppers standard.

I think if the cabinets are made to the company's standard dimensions you are not going to be able to expect their replacement unfortunately.

Are the cabinets the Espresso line from Cabico? We're about to finalize an order for half of our cabinets from that line with a slab door and I'm a bit concerned about your veneer issues. I did measure my plates and they should fit, but I'll confirm with the KD when we meet later this week.

As a KD, this post is a big 'heads up' for me. With the trend in larger plates, I will definitely start asking my clients about this. So many details in a kitchen!!!

Is there a way to install an additional half inch or so on the entire face of the cabinet that would be covered by the veneer to match the rest of the cabinet? I don't think you will be happy adjusting the doors out with the hinges since it will create a gap that is visible from the side.

Or just have one or two of the boxes remade to 15" deep. Guess that would depend on your layout.

My 1940's cabinets are exactly 12 inches deep not counting the door. Im suprised that newer cabinets would be smaller since dishes are getting bigger.

I don't think mine are from the espresso line. I did not know of that line when I ordered back in Oct.

They adjusted the hi nges today and like Socalsister said there is a large gap now and it's unattractive, but it may be my best option. I'll talk to KD about having some cabs made deeper, maybe it would look ok.

Yes, you have a good memory - the Labrador Blue granite was installed yesterday. It has more green than I thought, but we love it! I posted pics for JB1176, but not sure they saw it as it was such an old post by GW standards. I need to post pics. My kitchen is to tiny, it's sort of funny to post here. :)
When I had the same problem, they removed my cabinets, switched out the backs and made more room that way. It came out very well. Good luck with a fix for your cabs. I know how disheartening it is.

This reminds me of how my mom's dishes didn't fit in her dishwasher! Her everyday dinner plates were too wide to fit well between the prongs--they had an unusual curve to them and were quite large. Never even heard of that until she experienced it. She tortured herself for a number of years, keeping the plates she loved so dearly, and was more than happy to exchange her dishwasher this year for one that had NO bells & whistles and fit everything she onwed just perfectly.

Lesson learned--check your cabinets, but also bring your dishes to the appliance store!

KD just left and they are going to alter the one cabinet where i want to store my plates they way that Belasea suggested. problem solved, not perfect, but I'm happy.

Your pictures were confirmation that Labrador Antique was what we wanted. I thought I responded, but my mom passed away during that time and I may not have remembered to let you know. We are waiting to find slabs big enough to do our project without seams. The fabricator is looking

Our everyday dinner plates are 10-3/4" and fit nicely in our 12" outside measurement cabinets. The interior measurement is 11 1/2". We have partial overlay doors.

belasea, i also wanted the labrador blue after seeing yours, but could only find one (good) slab. it was beautiful. mostly blue and a light hazy gray running thru it. Fabricator said he perfered the darker slabs, like yours, but can't find them anymore.

even tho am late lol am so happy i found this thread, as i know invested in a cabinet and to my hurt my 10.5 dishes cant, hold the door wont close.frustrated i was....but after reading along i decided to buy some 1 by 3 wood and add two inches more to the back or front of my cabinet....am anxious to see how it works out

Same problem! Just discovered as they are now going in. Plates have gotten bigger and cabinets are getting smaller! Makes lots of sense! And my extra large serving plate used for meat and BBQ forget about it! Will have to use a drawer!!!

On another problem. I’ve use the Rubbermaid carousels for my misc extracts and spices. I doesn’t fit either. Anyone have recommended solutions? I have another spice rack but like this next to my range when cooking. Dont want it on the counter

Hi Linda, the KD was able to fix one or two of the cabinets. It was so long ago I don’t remember the details. But someone posted on Jun 17, I think, that her KD put the cabinet anchors in wrong. So they removed the cabinet and reversed the anchor. It made perfect sense to me 10 yrs ago. But maybe you can try that...

I’m having the same problem!!! regular size dinner plates don’t fit in the standard 12 inch caninet because the doors are inlaid and the anchors stick out at least an inch. please help!!!

Wish I found this thread sooner... just started placing my plates inside my new cabs (doors not inset)... the dishes hang a quarter inch over the shelf. Looks dumb. Disappointing.

Following this old thread! I also posted about a similar issue. My 20 inch depth upper custom-built cabinets don’t fit a standard 10.5” dinner plate. I don’t think my cabinet builder believes he can make any adjustments or is willing to in any case, but it’s nice to hear some of y’all have found some functional solutions.

I suppose there is some solace in not being alone! We should all get together and throw a dinner party with our “giant” plates 😆
