Comments (6)I have a hard time finding old cupboards, like the one above, that are in good condition. When I go to the flea market, I see a lot of them, but on closer examination, they are often new or cobbled together. Or badly painted and in poor condition. However, one of my favorite ones, my husband found sitting out in someone's trash. It needs a new glass in the door, but it is way cool with lots of stacked/crown molding and original hardware on the door. I'd take a picture of it, but it is in the Rust Palace...which is what I call the storage building because I have so much old iron stuff in there, and I can't get close enough to it to take a picture. Another one I have, I went to an estate auction in Galveston years ago. There was so much cool stuff in that house...but out in the garage was a couple cupboards. One, hanging on the wall, that had an old window for a door. The other one was huge....and extra wide and deep....and very heavy. The owner had stored paint and all kinds of stuff in them. I waited all day to bid on them and passed up a lot of nice things that I would have liked to have. When they finally came up...I got the hanging one for about $35, and I was pleased. But the big one....a dealer was there to buy it and she was determined. I had waited on it all day so I wasn't going to let it go. She kept uping the bids by $50 trying to scare me away. I just stayed with her, and I don't remember how much it cost...maybe $600. She left...mad. I left...happy....See MoreMarilyn C
Comments (17)He had money...and he gave most of it to me. I was spposed to get his ashes, but when they found out about the money, they wouldn't give me his ashes. Well, that's okay. I know what he would say. "It's just an old body. It doesn't matter." I told him that would happen...so, at least I wasn't surprised. He didn't want to go to a nursing home, and we made this agreement seven years ago. I promised him I would take care of him until he died. I am glad he didn't have to die, hooked up to tubes or forgotten in the back room, of a nursing home. They were talking bad about me...saying I only did it for the money, but let me tell you...I couldn't go or do anything without taking care of him, and it was a 40 mile round trip over there that I made every day at least once, and sometimes as often as four times a day. They were too important and too busy to be bothered with his care...so leave it to me...my time isn't valuable like theirs. I guess they thought I should have done this for free. It isn't that I wouldn't have. I couldn't afford the cost of driving over there and back every day...and the hours it took to take care of him. He did nothing. He didn't even flush the toilet. I took care of him, his house, his yard, his truck, his taxes, brought him a hot meal every day, and kept the fridge well stocked for him. I brought him books, magazines and movies and sat and talked to him. I treated him as kindly as I would want to be treated. The last 4 years of his life, he never stepped foot out of his house. I kept him alive....when they wanted him to die...simply by being there and making sure he was never around anyone who was sick. He had emphysema so badly, he couldn't walk to the kitchen without difficulty. He was a very intelligent man, well read but extremely difficult because he wouldn't do anything he was supposed to do...like not smoke, eat right, etc. I'm not a saint. I got paid for taking care of him, but if anyone doesn't think that is a burden to take on, and one that went on for years...think again. I have no regrets though because I was very kind to him, and he died knowing I was there, and in his own house and that is what meant the most to him. The week I spent sleeping on his floor, I had to bring all three of my dogs...so I was up at daylight, walking the dogs, and all around him, live his family. They had to have seen that or my truck in the driveway all night. You know they had to have realized something was wrong...but not one of them called or came by. Probably afraid I would ask them to help do something....See Moremarilyn_c I have been thinking about you
Comments (4)Raven, that is so kind of you to make sure he has food and water and don't mind him staying in the cats' condo. If he can stay there and rest, he just might get well. Possums are amazing in their ability to heal. I have one right now that came in with one baby and on her back was a huge wound. She had been caught in a trap with the babies and with no food, they had started chewing on her. The back is a common place that they will chew. They will also chew on the faces of their mothers. Mother possums chew food and let the babies take it from their mouths, which is probably why they get their faces chewed on. She only had one baby when brought to me, but the others probably had escaped out of the trap. I took the remaining baby from her, so it wouldn't chew on her any further. People will trap them...usually in the process of trapping feral cats, and since it is "just an old possum" they don't get in any hurry to remove them from the trap. Plus, most people are intimidated by them and can't get them out of the trap very easily anyway. My mama possum is almost well now. Her injury was the size of a silver dollar, or bigger when she came here and is about like a nickel now. I was just thinking last night how much she enjoys the food here. I fed her yogurt and kibble and a dish of bananas, grapes and avocado. Possums do drink a lot of water. If the possum is hanging around, you might give it a little bit of left overs, if you are so inclined. They will eat anything. On the other hand....while I have seen many possums heal from horrific injuries, I have also seen those that look to be perfectly healthy, go down and die within a couple of days. And, their life span is very short anyway. A two year old wild possum is an old one. Thank you for caring about one of the most misunderstood of all creatures....See MoreCalling Marilyn C
Comments (8)He's doing great. He also has a friend now, named Ralphie, a long haired, orange kitten. Someone called me and said they had a feral kitten and wanted me to take it. You know, you seldom get the real stories on animals that people want you to take. The story was that his mother abandoned him, but he was about the same age as Favio, maybe a week older. I told them, no, animals aren't like people. They don't abandon their babies....at least no mama cat is going to abandon a kitten that big....maybe she was killed. So I went to see the kitten, and he was a cute little thing, but definitely not feral. Feral kittens hiss and spit. The only thing this one did was cry all the time. So, I think the real reason she was getting rid of it, she got the kitten, and it was too young to leave it's mother and so it cried all the time, and she told me "it won't shut up". So, I figured he would be good company for Favio. I named him Ralphie....and no, he doesn't cry any more. It has been a big help to me, to have two kittens. Fav was used to being by himself and didn't cry, but he needed company to play with and Ralphie has worked out perfectly. My daughter had said she was looking for an orange kitten, so I offered Ralphie to her, but I didn't think she would take him because last I heard, they were looking at an older cat at the shelter, and anyway, he is Fav's friend, so he will be staying here with Favio. Favio has done exceptionally well, but I admit to worrying more about him than any baby I have ever raised. He was a little slow to switch over to solid food....Ralphie helped with that. An older cat here comes in and she likes them and bathes them....so they have a "nanny". :D I am going to try and get a better picture of Favio and will post it in a few minutes. I woke Ralpie up to take his picture...so he looks sleepy in the picture. Will try to get a better one of him soon. Anyway, they are both doing great, and Fav is so special to me. He is so cuddly because he is used to being held. He almost never is still....plays all the time. Ralphie isn't quite as affectionate as Favio, but he sleeps next to me and he loves being combed. I use a flea comb on them because their nanny is an outside cat and when she comes in, sometimes she brings a flea or two. I flea comb both of them two or three times a day. When I comb Ralphie, he "fleas" me in return....gently chewing on my arm. They are the sweetest babies and extra special to me. If anyone ever has the chance to raise an orphan, it takes a lot of dedication....they need to be fed every couple of hours starting out, but they are the most affectionate and cuddly cats you will ever have. Here is Ralphie, and I will see if I can get a better pic of Fav....See Moreyeonassky
