Do you need the built in? It might be easier just to take it out completely and purchase a stand alone cabinet to go there instead.

Unit was probably built in place, and mirrors are probably glued so it may not come apart easy.

The problem with taking it out is have the same style, minus mirror, wine and glass holder on the left side of the fireplace.

It's a terrible due to moving items off of the built in on the left side of the fireplace. If the sink has to stay, then so be . I definitely don't want the mirrors or the built in wine racks.

I agree that it makes the most sense to demo everything from the top up. Then you can remove the sink, add a new countertop over it, and put open shelving where the wineholders were. If the mirror is glued on, you can tape over it and break it to dispose of it. Obviously you'll need gloves and safety goggles.

Cover the mirrors with duct tape and hit them with a hammer to break them up. then use a putty knife to pop them off the back of the cabinet.

For the moment just get some stiff cardboard, cut it the size of the mirrors, paint it an accent color (or cover it with wall paper) and put one or three of your favorite objects on that shelf plus a companion one on the lower shelf next to the sink. Then you can relax until you or someone else comes to remove the mirrors and the wine racks.

@yvonnecmartin, I had read that on some other site about covering with a painted cardboard. Not sure if my dh will approve of this, but since we are trying to not spend money on this it may be the only way to go.

I was thinking the same, Beverly. Just paint the mirror if you have no use for it, OP. Could you or a handyman cut out the wine glass holders and divider? I'd then remove the sink, get new countertops for both units and paint them the wall colour (and darken the fireplace mantel). FWIW, wet bars are coming back...

I would hire a carpenter to come in and have him take out what is not needed, and make new shelves that match the other side, so you have two matching ones. I dont blame you, I wouldnt want the wet bar either.

No one knows what you want to achieve aside from painting the build-ins.

If you want the sink gone, everything from the counter top up has to go (in order to replace the counter.)

I would want that wooden soffit mess out of there, too. Looks like the wine rack thing is built in place. IOW's, you're going to have to dig out the pry bars.
