Great horny toads, er frogs.
Comments (1)I've never had to do anything special. I end up with lots of tadpoles, which then might end up being 10 little frogs, which then end up being about 3 -4 big frogs. Karin...See MoreMore on Fire-bellied Toads
Comments (15)Sahoy: Be sure never to get in the position I am in - ordering 1000 crickets every other week!! I have special 12" tweezers made for picking up crickets. They don't hurt the crickets at all (unless you squeeze too hard!). I only use them to handfeed certain animals, but you could definatly use them to avoid touching the crickets. If I were you, I would go to petsmart once weekly and buy a few dozen crickets. You could keep them in a plastic critter cage and use the tweezers to transfer some to the the frogs' cage daily. When you run out of crickers, you could take a day to clean the cage with hot water and then re-stock your supply. I honestly don't know why everyone makes such a big deal about the crickets. Yeah, they're gross, but it's not rocket science. In my experience, you just need to keep the crickets alive in their cage with plenty of food and water, and then clean and re-stock the cage when you run out. It's that simple. BTW, my firebelly eats up 3/4th inch crickets, has no UV light, and is has been going on strong for 5 years now....See MoreA Toad! A Toad!
Comments (9)What a coincidence, I almost started a toad thread too.. :) Last week I walked out on my front sidewalk at night and what looked like a leaf suddenly hopped into the garden bed when I walked by! It was a big fat toad! I was so excited because he is the first toad I've seen in the yard after living here almost 5 years. I even put a large plant saucer down on the ground last year and fill it with water so the toads would access to water. (The birds drink from it sometimes too.) I think he might be living under the bulb and daylily foliage. Of course I had to run and grab the camera -...See MoreToad Eggs Toxic?
Comments (2)I wasn't aware toad eggs were a problem. But apparently they are toxic if ingested (at least in humans - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2660035/). I suspect the goldfish ate a bunch of them and died from that. I don't know how to prevent toads from breeding in your pond other than to go out at night and remove any calling males and move them to a new breeding place. If you intervene right when they start calling, you can get to the males before the females do in theory?...See More
