Thanks for the responses! @tapla It looks like the leaves are near the apices. I've added some pictures below. Is your explanation related to juvenile growth in the sense of new leaves that are just emerging, or do you mean juvenile in the sense of a less mature plant? If the former, I'm seeing the same issue in the older leaves so it is not limited to new growth. @hc mcdole- The "bleaching" I'm referencing is just the general color of the leaves- they are sort of olive on the front and a very light orang-ish red on the back rather than the deep green and red I've seen on other plants. The pictures make the green look a bit darker than they actually are- they're fairly light olive green. And as I mentioned above, the perceived discoloration is present in both the new growth and existing growth.

Cas Li, Yours is not a maculata but rather a hybrid with maculata in its parentage. The leaf is too wide for its length IMO. Try looking at Flamingo Queen which is a dramatic hybrid from maculata and so many other wonderful hybrids with maculata in it. Go to the International Database of Begonias and do an advanced find. Put in maculata as one of the parents and do a search. This database is a bit fussy so if you do the next page of results, then use the next at the bottom of the page. Do not use the next button at the top of the page. If you want to see each match (make sure it is a cane type) then right mouse click and do an open in a new window or tab. They all have the same genetic flaw though - mildew prone. There are spots on other leaves. I just noticed it this morning. Some are on the edges and some are in the middle. I’ll definitely check tonight to see if I can see any pests. I have another plant I keep nearby that has similar looking abrasions. (Photo attached)

I agree with Dave on this being a fussy cane begonia. Root rot comes from too much watering as well. I keep mine in the basement and have learned to keep them on the drier side in winter. Mildew is the one issue that can make these types quickly turn ugly. I don't mist my canes but I do water by hose so if some of the leaves get wet, not a huge deal. I have several I've grown from seeds collected off the mother plant that seem identical or slightly different. I wished I had known about watering back when I started getting canes. Here was the mother plant back in Sep, 2009 in the same 18" pot of Encanto Bronze (the bigger cane), Mrs. Hashimoto (the plain green one with white blooms, and Morocco. close up of it, Mrs. Hashimoto and Morocco. Here it was in bloom that year. The seed grown ones last Sep in a slightly smaller pot (maybe 15") and blooming. The plant to the left is Begonia platanifolia (another good sized begonia) This same pot the winter before had mildew so bad that I lost some stems and almost all the leaves before I did anything to remedy the situation. Now if I had a big GH like at the Atlanta Botanical Garden, we could grow them to 12 to 14 feet tall.
