Begonia Maculata Problems a

I moved from NYC to Alabama with my 6 year old begonia Maculata and I can’t seem to find the right conditions for it here. Do you know why the leaves look so terrible? I get really intense sunlight in my bedroom so I moved it about 8 feet from the window where it doesn’t get any direct light. I had it in a shelf greenhouse in NYC because my cat kept eating the leaves but it caused the plant to be quite leggy. Is there anything I can do to get the bottom of the plant to fill out a bit more? Apologies for the angle of the picture; I have to keep it out my cat‘s reach.
