Remodeling Design Dilemma Kitchens

Help with flooring and granite choice for 8" ceiling older home

I am doing an entire kitchen remodel on a 1976 home with 8 foot kitchen ceilings with medium amount of light. I really like the look of the slate stain on maple cabinets but I don't know how to pair the flooring color and granite. I have heard lighter floors hide dog hair which is also a dilemma. I like the clean look of white granite with grey swirls but I also like the busy slabs with the leather finish. Any suggestions? Does flooring have to be such a contrast with dark cabinets if the countertop is light? Basically is the floor and counter suppose to match or floor and cabinet? The drawing picture will be most of the design.

I like the lighter floor in the pic w the cabs which I presume are your style and color. They used a taupe backsplash and similar gray or taupe counter...nice rich look. I might mimic the floor option and go w a whitish counter and backsplash....with your windows - a nice gloss white tile and the light coming in would work well for the space. You can keep it simple. I'm not that keen on the heavy movement and dark granites you show ....but choose what you like. ...there are many ways to take it but I'd be careful w the dark cabs ......would get light elements around it.

What are the floors in the rest of the house? IMO if they are wood then the same floor in the kitchen . There are so many issues when doing a kitchen and it is not decided as a seperate entity it needs to flow with the rest of the house . Lighting is IMO the first thing to address lots of 4” LED pot lights in 4000K range will help a lot in choosing colors . The floor colo to hide dog hair depends on the color of your dog and I am kidding. Get a swiffer that is the best way to hide dog hair. I never like maple stained cabinets the maple rarely takes a stain perfectly and if you are already worried about light those dark cabinets will gobble light like crazy The lanterns above the island in your drawing are Edison bulbs and will cast a yellow light all over everything and provide no proper lighting at all. You don’t seem to have an idea of the whole space yet and until you do I would suggest not making any choices, better yey ge a KD before you live to regret an expensive undertaking.

I guess it's personal choice but I think it actually makes a room look bigger to go up to the ceiling! Here are some choices you should have: 1. Use 30" uppers with crown molding (lots of open space above) 2. Use 36" uppers; fill with 2pc crown molding (6" high) 3. Use 39" uppers; fill with one or two pc. crown molding (3" high) A 2 pc. molding is preferred due to unlevel ceilings and floors...gives more wiggle room 4. Go custom and use whatever height uppers and crown you wish. I'm not a big fan of 42" uppers all the way to the ceiling, unless it's in a modern/contemporary designed kitchen (ie. slab doors). But even then, you need a shadow line or small molding at the top, usually. Honestly though, if your cabinet (maker?) or designer couldn't help you with these simple options, you might start looking at other cabinet people.

Thanks everyone for all of your ideas, and the photos are so great. First, I played around with a color visualizer to get an idea about how the dark blue granite would look: Good thing I don't do photoshop for a living, LOL, but it gave me an idea about how it would look. I also put in a call to the granite guy to see what he says about possibly replacing the stove later, and waiting to hear from him to clarify. I don't completely understand the issue about how the granite has to be cut to accommodate the existing stove. He may have to determine that when he makes the template. I do see in the photos that the stainless stove looks good with other appliances being white. The key would be to keep the dishwasher white so that the stove is highlighted. This is all so helpful, thanks!

I totally understand your concerns about maintaining congruity with the era of the house. My personal feeling is the the mix of old and new is what makes design interesting. I'm not a fan of walking into say an all modern room in a vintage home. It's jarring. But intentionally integrating a modern element into a more traditional space can be the spark that "makes" it. So, for your bathroom, the larger hex can be a "riff" on the classic tile - that updates it while playing homage to the house's era. At the same time, the use of a solid blue on the floor is already a more modern use of the material. So you could go with a smaller blue hex rather than the larger. I would choose your grout very carefully. I personally don't like a ton of contrast between the tile color and the grout. It just looks really busy to my eye. I also am imminently practical and would never put white grout on a floor. Something in the medium gray range would probably work best but I would have your tile installer make you up a couple sample boards once you get to that point. No, I will no longer be showing my home or responding on this board. My home is my safe place. It is not your playground for you stomp on and hide your gum under. I think sometimes we forget people decorate and design from the heart (not because they are misguided or feel lost). I do my research from all time periods deciding for myself which is enduring and which is a trend. Just because the almighty Design Gods say it is, does not make it so. So far on this board, I have been pecked at by a few of you for my ideas and research during this time period. Just because you have a screen between you and I, does not make me someone without feeling. I asked a simple question, all that was needed was a polite, simple response.
