Painting ceiling--Textured ceiling
Comments (4)Our whole house came with heavily textured ceilings when we bought it. The previous homeowners had paid to have texture added to every ceiling in the house when they added the master bedroom. Removing it meant getting in the experts...asbestos...and lots and lots of $$$. The first couple rooms we painted, we used the large nap rollers. Go in one direction first, let it dry, then paint in the other direction. With shadows on the texture it's hard to tell where you've 'missed a spot' but painting from north to south and when dry, west to east, really made sure we got all those spots. A few years later we rented a sprayer when we were doing another couple of rooms. WOW...what a difference. We were done with the ceiling in an hour! Again, first one way, let it set, then the other way. Push all the furniture into the middle of the room. Tape what you can. We were lazy and I just went around with a large piece of cardboard/shield and held it up where Mr. Amity sprayed..worked perfectly! We painted with water-base paint so any little bit of overspray came off with a damp kitchen sponge...the gentle kind used for Teflon pans. About 7 years ago when we decided to tackle the last couple rooms in the house, Mr. Amity went out and bought a sprayer. Let me tell ya....that spray has paid for itself 10 times over! Not only used for the ceiling but for walls, brick wall, front to back wood fence, chain link dog run, sealer on concrete.....you name it, we spray it on now and save so much time and energy....See MoreNeed advice for scraping and painting ceiling
Comments (24)What has been said^. The old popcorn texture hasn't been cleaned off enough to skim. When I removed popcorn, I used hot water in a garden sprayer w/ some dish soap added. Sprayed, let it sit a bit and then peeled the texture off with a wide blade drywall knife. Then I did a skip trowel texture. If you want to try skimcoating it yourself, I would buy a drywall squeegee. I haven't used this tool but did use a plain old window squeegee on a problem area of drywall. Worked good enough for me to make a note to buy the drywall version the next time I have a need. (I suck at knife work; the squeegee felt much more 'natural' to me.) If you're concerned about water absorption that Live Wire mentioned. you can prime the drywall w/ primer or paint with a flat paint before skimcoating. Flat paint only because it's toothier. Don't use gloss, semi-gloss, etc....See Moreadvice on painting ceiling paneling
Comments (9)I agree the room looks a bit dark, but, I would not paint the ceiling just yet. It is beautiful. I think one of the reasons for the darkness, is the lack of lighting, and the wrong type of lighting. Proper lighting is very important, Extra lighting in all 4 corners of the ceiling, and better lighting where the ceiling fan is, would help considerably. I only notice one small lamp, and that ceiling fan, for the entire room. Also make sure your bulbs, are at least 4000k daylight type led bulbs....See MorePainting ceiling - what to do with dark beams?
Comments (5)For our 1970s remodel, we painted the walls and ceiling (not tpungue and groove) white and left the beams dark (we actually re-wrapped them and stained darker because the old ones were reddish cedar ans wouldnt take stain). We have light floors. the contrast works....See Morehollybar
