Painting ceiling--Textured ceiling

Hi all and Happy New Year!!!

I am working on a room and not sure if textured, kinda of swirley, not sure what you call it, ceilings, can be painted. I am sure it can, but how would it look?

I am painting my room a gray/blue and want the ceiling a lighter color of the same strip.

Does anyone have pics or suggestions regarding painting this type of ceiling? Maybe I should just leave it white?

Use a roller designed for textured surfaces, based on the depth of your texture.

As long as it's not that crumbly "popcorn", yes, it can be painted.

Use a 1/2 or 3/4 inch nap roller and take your time so you don't have skips and thin spots.

Asbestos was used in various ceiling textures, adn even some drywall compound. The only way to be sure is to have it tested. If it comes back positive for asbestos the leading remedy would be to seal it in place. By painting it.

Matching popcorn ceilings is a very difficult job. I'm posting a pic below of a reposession rehab I did this year of a seven-year old townhouse. The painter patched the ceiling subjected to long-neglected leaks, then re-textured the area. In the photo, it stands out. In person, you'd really only see it if you knew what you were looking for. Respraying the entire ceiling in a new coat of paint would have completely disguised the repair. Similarly, when I've torn down partitioning walls and was faced with three different ceiling heights and different texturing, the plasterer levelled the ceilings with mesh and plaster, then applied new heavy texturing to the entire ceiling. Breezygirl, this does help since one of the reasons my kitchen was going to cost so much was because I wanted to remove the empty soffit and install 36" cabinets with crown molding. Most stores wanted to then remove all the popcorn first in all rooms downstairs telling me they could not patch it up. My most recent quote was in January 2014 and the contractor was going to put a beam to separate the rooms which I did not like as he said he had to remove the popcorn. I prefer no beam and to have just a straight line with the other room having popcorn if it costs too much to remove. I will try to take a picture of my kitchen. I love my tiles and it is helping to see that BM Simply White looks best with my tiles. I am going to put the recessed lights in my living room which is my home office and leave the fixture in the dining room part of the home office. I will then see if that room becomes a mess (has no lights in the ceiling now) before seeing who can patch up my ceilings. I will revisit my kitchen cabinets after the lighting is done downstairs, my wood floors are installed in the other three rooms to close out my insurance claim and my windows and doors downstairs are replaced as the vinyl has cracked and it is cold in the winter time. I really want kitchen cabinets and a counter like Breezygirl. I needed tiles due to little dogs going in and out the sliding door in the kitchen and having a KitchenAid dishwasher that will be 5 years old at the end of October with now poor reviews of a failing pump. I can't afford another insurance claim for my wood floors. I am only using the dishwasher if I am home. I paid a lot for this dishwasher.

Jennifer, cool to see the various types of ceiling textures. My builder asked me if I wanted popcorn -- in a jesting manner. No way! (Laughing.) He gave me smooth Or maybe it is a very light sand texture??? I just know it isn't popcorn or any of those other textures in the link! As for the walls, they were done smooth. Yes, the bathrooms may someday show imperfections but I want them washable and so asked for eggshell. As far as here goes (current home), apparently I have a moderately-perlite/sand textured ceiling, which is fine by me. The basement den ceiling is smooth, because we added that on. I'd actively like a Spanish texture on ceilings and walls were I building a Southwestern adobe home.

I see no reason to NOT paint a ceiling!
AND... you can use a color other than white if you so choose.

Our whole house came with heavily textured ceilings when we bought it.
The previous homeowners had paid to have texture added to every ceiling in the house when they added the master bedroom.
Removing it meant getting in the experts...asbestos...and lots and lots of $$$.

The first couple rooms we painted, we used the large nap rollers.
Go in one direction first, let it dry, then paint in the other direction.
With shadows on the texture it's hard to tell where you've 'missed a spot' but painting from north to south and when dry, west to east, really made sure we got all those spots.

A few years later we rented a sprayer when we were doing another couple of rooms.
WOW...what a difference. We were done with the ceiling in an hour! Again, first one way, let it set, then the other way.
Push all the furniture into the middle of the room.
Tape what you can.
We were lazy and I just went around with a large piece of cardboard/shield and held it up where Mr. Amity sprayed..worked perfectly!
We painted with water-base paint so any little bit of overspray came off with a damp kitchen sponge...the gentle kind used for Teflon pans.

About 7 years ago when we decided to tackle the last couple rooms in the house, Mr. Amity went out and bought a sprayer.
Let me tell ya....that spray has paid for itself 10 times over!
Not only used for the ceiling but for walls, brick wall, front to back wood fence, chain link dog run, sealer on concrete.....you name it, we spray it on now and save so much time and energy.
