Terry, no offense to your painter, but just because someone has been doing something for a long time doesn't mean they do it correctly. Do not use oil based primers or products on masonry. Masonry is extremely porous and acts like a sponge when water or moisture is around. Very difficult to keep totally dry especially since it is a rigid product and the earth is flexible. Hairline cracks are almost always present. Oil based products have a very tight molecular makeup and do not allow moisture vapor to pass thru the coating and will result in an adhesion break and subsequent peeling. It is not always necessary to use primer to promote adhesion. How do finish paints stick to the primer if they do not have good adhesive qualities? Special primers are used for adhesion promoters to glossy or non-porous surfaces, sealing stains, as barriers between dissimilar solvented products such as alkyds and urethanes, or when products of different porousity are combined (like drywall paper and joint compound throughout a wall). A simple adhesion test can be performed to determine when and what type of primer to use. Clean area to be painted. Apply a small sample of paint. Let dry for the most amount of time you can - 7 days is the industry standard but rarely can anyone wait that long. Once coating is cured, use a razor blade and XXXXXXXX the coating in a grid pattern. Place a piece of clear household tape (scotch tape) and firmly press onto the test area. Now quickly remove tape. Examine results - small pieces of paint coming off is normal - such as little pieces of the corners where you made your X. Lots of paint coming off is bad. Now is the time to research the specific primer needed for the job. Priming all exterior surfaces everytime is not necessary.

pretty house! Cedar shingles naturally age to a soft silver-gray, which would be very nice with the brick. Cedar & brick always seem to me to be a casual, warm, & inviting combination, not formal or fussy, & colors that "go with" rather than contrast are good for that mood. so you might paint the shutters (while you're on that ladder anyway, what the heck?) to pick up the dark color in the brick, or use charcoal gray/almost black as a darker version of the cedar; it would anchor & unify the upper & lower stories. I too think there is too much yellow in the paint color and it increases the yellow wood tone, which I'm not a fan of...however, if you like the wood tone, then I would try a different green if that is your go to color. I have used SW "Coastal Plains" several times and have always been extremely happy but it was in combination with white trim...good luck!!

I need help to repaint my open floor house. I just painted my house Creamy SW and I hate it. I have a gray oak flooring and I need a Neutral color that compliments my flooring. white Is not an option I have small kids. I’m thinking about repose gray 50% or agreeable gray.
