I would hate to lose a loonie, at least the monetary kind. I use a credit card, so usually don't use cash.

I've learned to grab the paper between my two fingers then roll my palm up for the change. I hate it too as the change invariable goes every which way.

I wish they'd put the receipt in the bag. Just yesterday, I made a purchase and as I'm trying to put my change in my purse, the cashier was standing there holding out the receipt, so I took it from her and put it in the bag in order not to hold up the line. Normally, I would have told her to just put it in the bag, but she was talking to one of her co-workers.

I've also gotten to the point that I usually drop my coins into whatever charity donation box is sitting on the checkout stand. It's easier and the change adds up for the featured charity.

Like, joan, I use a credit card 90% of the time, so it's not usually an issue.

Same here, it's always annoyed me. So I try to be prepared for it and if I see the receipt is going in my hand first say "no" and grab it with my other hand. The thing that REALLY gets me worse than that is if a clerk has those horrible LONG fingernails - I'm talking the kind that are so long they are starting to curl - and they try to give me back change or anything with those disgusting things possibly touching my hand - NOT! I'll ask the clerk to put it down on the counter and then I'll pick it up. There's not too many things that skeeze me out worse than those nasty, creepy claws that some women think are so lovely - just looking at them sends chills up my arm - Yuckkk!!!

I just stuff any change and the receipt in my pocket and sort it out when I get to my car. Being a man I don't put loose change in my wallet only bills. The loose change goes into a compartment in my car's console that I will sometimes hand out to pan-handlers standing on the corner.

It's been a pet peeve of mine for decades. I stop them whenever possible and make them put the coins in my hand first. Especially at a drive through. Mostly I use credit cards so I avoid this issue.

I find it interesting that it is also a problem in Canada. I thought it was a US lack of education thing due to the fact that no one is taught to count back change anymore.

And unless they COUNT IT OUT ,!! we are supposed to assume that it is the correct amount.......

OMG. Me too!! I thought I was just getting way too persnickety in my old age. :)

I go through drive-throughs for coffee and I'm baffled why they hand change back this way. Drives me crazy! The bills and/or change are on top of the receipt and I'm left trying to balance the pile to get in back in the car before it falls all over the pavement.

Can we start a movement, a re-education campaign, something?

I was told by someone that it is done this way because there are some people do not want money to touch their hand. Apparently the receipt is considered clean even though a person will at least have to touch the money with their fingertips. When I think of all the things I touch in a day touching the money is the least of my worries. I think though it is a carry over from back when women and some men carried small coin purses. folding the money inside the receipt was quicker than separating it out.

At least if the money is on top you should be able to quickly figure out if you have been given the correct change.

I learned my technique from watching the cashier in the lunch line who was handed cash in all kinds of ways...if you reach out with you thumb and index and palm down, they *can't* put the receipt in your palm and the change on top...they have to hand you the paper first, then flip your hand over palm up to get the coins. Try it...it works 90% of the time.

Doesn't bother me but what does bother me is when they overly touch your hand when handing you your money back. Usually creepy guys. lol. Even at my age it creeps me out.

Annie, that is brilliant! I don't think clerks are trained to do it that way. They are not trained at all for this part of the exchange. They simply are not thinking.

Exactly, Elizabeth. No one knows how to make change any more. A big peeve of mine.

Pockets, pockets, pockets. I have to regularly empty and sort pockets of jackets, vests, coats and it's surprising how much money accumulates there.

My nephew was living in an apartment with coin-op laundry one year and I could just about finance his washing and drying with what I would take from my pockets when seeing him.

It doesn't perturb me because I try to follow the counsel "don't sweat the small stuff and it's all small stuff".

I have a now-automatic reaction - when a receipt is extended I say "No thanks, I don't want the receipt". If the response is "I have to give it to you" then I say either "You can put it in the bag" if there is one or if not then "please put it down on the counter for a moment". I take the change in my hand (I can quickly estimate for correctness by looking at the paper money and the quarters) and then leave with my purchase and the receipt remaining on the counter.

I too use mostly my credit card for anything over $20 so cash payments with change in return are infrequent. I also don't take credit card receipts.

Each day's loose change, if any, is emptied from my pocket into a jar on my bathroom counter and taken when full to a Coinstar machine for Amazon credit.

Nope. Doesn't bother me. I throw it all in my purse and sort it later. And I NEED my receipts. Those are money to me. I use several cash back/receipt scanning apps to get either gift cards or actual cash back.

Drive them crazy, give them a big bill and some extra change. Like $20.20 for a $14.95 purchase. I get told that I can"t do that. I say, no, YOU just can't figure it out. (I hate small xhange...)

I’m a cashier at a grocery chain store and when I give back change, I put the bills on top of the receipt and hand the change to the person in their other hand. Plus, I also count the change back, something most cashiers these days rarely do.

When I encounter a liira bundling the receipt with the paper money, I say - I'll take the money, you can keep the receipt.

"RARELY" nowadays can anyone count out the change....they automatically go by the cash register/computer

I find that the cashiers put us thru way too quickly-no idea what the rush is all about.

I count my change,always,before I even think about putting it in my purse,wallet or pocket.

Jasdip-you'll find you're given the change/receipt together due to this RUSH.

Stand your ground and do not move until you have your receipt where you want it,your change where you want it and yourself mentally gathered-I find I get frustrated when at a till I am rushed.....up here,its' tourist/cottage time-the stores are busy-REALLY busy-however, I shop in those stores year round,not just a week at the peak of summer holidays.

Just last night I watched the lady ahead of me question the price of the cucumber-the till came up at 99cents...the posted price was $1.99....the kid on the till asked someone else the price,they didnt know,so she entered it again....this time-$1.69...I said to that lady SCOP-scanning code of practice-you get it free....city/cottage person..she paid the $1.69 and away she went.

I'll be damned if anyone is going to rush me.....hahaha...and the majority are not fond of that.

Ont_Gal, a week ago, I was standing behind a fellow and just casually watching his items get run through. The screen was visible to me, and I pointed out that the clerk had rung in Broccoli instead of Bananas. She looked and sure enough. Big difference between .57/lb and $.199/lb. The man was very appreciative.

Now I want to go buy something, just to put these tips into practice, and stand my ground. No more Ms Nice Girl and then just getting ticked about it.

we have "self check out" at most food stores, i avoid the problem altogether!

If you walk into a store with an attitude and uncompromising expectations, you'll be sure to find things to get angry about.

If you're inflexible and want to take your time just to show that you can, try shopping at slower times of day. If you're not sure when those are, call the store and ask.

Yes it frustrates me when the slippery coins are on top of the bills and you are trying to balance it all and move away in a hurry. I've tried to teach my employees to hand the change first but to only count out the bills. I think the next folks in line might riot while waiting for coin counting to end.

I bought a bag of potatoes and the very nice male cashier handed me my change first and then the bill and receipt. I thanked him for doing it that way and he said that he doesn't like getting the change on top of the receipt either! :-)

A few cashiers itemize paper currency change, e.g. change for a $20.00 payment for a $4.68 purchase, which would be rounded to $4.70, as we don't use pennies, s/he points out three $5.00 bills, then gives the quarter and nickel.

Some get confused when one offers a $20.00 bill and a couple of dimes to pay for a $10.20 purchase, expecting the much simplified change of a $10.00 bill.

Hold out your hand with the thumb and index finger on top, a slim space between them, and the other three fingers below the index.

After the paper currency and receipt are held between the thumb and index, rotate the hand to be palm-up, to receive the coins.

I bought a little kids book today marked down to $1.29, 1.33 with tax at Target. I hated the thought of putting something so small on my credit card but as I approached the checkout I discovered I still had a little change purse in my pocket that I'd used at lunch. Let's see if we can quickly eek it out... Two quarters, good start , another one, continued to count out dimes and a nickle.

Holding change in one hand and counting it into the one with trigger finger got unwieldy so I gave her what I'd counted saying "very close, you check it." OMG, she struggled and I felt awful for stressing her out. Finally she said "it's perfect". Great.

Welp, as someone who runs a cash register quite often at work, at least you get your change put in your hand. We often have our hands out to take your cash, but quite a few customers toss it (yes, TOSS IT) on the counter for us to catch.

IMO, it's a first world problem.

Ole Joyful - thanks for the further explanation. It helped. :) I may try it, except I have visions of them still dumping my change on top of the receipt into my hand anyway - in which case it's guaranteed to fall all over the pavement.

Debby - it is 100% a first world problem. However, in my defense, I work hard for all of my money and I would like to keep as much of it as I can. My issue is almost exclusive to drive throughs, and one of these days my change is going to get dumped on the pavement. Chance are I'll get out to retrieve it...which will further annoy any impatient people behind me.

So in response to this first world problem, I've decided I'm going to speak up and politely ask them to give me my change first.

You'll keep more of your money if you stay away from drive-throughs.

I like my morning coffee, and consider it my treat to get it from my favorite drive-through on the way to work. It motivates me enough to get me out the door, which keeps me employed....so it's a net win. ;)

Debby, I've never seen a customer throw money down on the counter. Sometimes change will drop and I always pick it up and apologize, but never tossed at the clerk.

And, okay it's a first-world problem but it's still highly irritating having to balance it all on the way to my wallet......which is always open and ready.

Which also reminds me of when I wait in line, the customer has all of the purchases rung through......then they open their purse, rummage around for the wallet etc. Good grief.

If your change drops at the drive-thru, it may well be under the car ... so you drive a few feet ahead, driving and braking slowly, till the back of your car is not quite a yard ahead of where your hand was when the change escaped ... then get out to go back to search for the escapee(s).

Going too far'll likely mean that your change is under the front of the following vehicle: and the cashier'll likely be unwilling to replace it.

Good luck with getting about three vehicles to back up a yard or so.

Giving the service person a wicked/leering smile ... maybe offer him/her a nickel tip, if one is on the ground (especially if it's a bit muddy).
