How do you like your marble countertops?
Comments (41)I often see posts about Carrera and Calacutta marbles --- has anybody done Crema Marfil? Is it really a "true" marble? I had a granite in mind for my master bath and there isn't enough of it. On my revisit to the stone yard I was once again attracted to the soothing qualities of crema marfil --- only a tiny bit of veining, very consistent, with once in a while fossils. It looks very pretty. My other granite choices just didn't seem to work as well with the fabrics and cabinets that I have in mind. The crema marfil would make a very monochromatic look, but it would allow my pretty windows to shine and would hopefully all just look pretty together. But, I came home, jumped on GW and saw so little about it that it worries me! Don't mean to hijack, I'm just hoping somebody has experience with this stone! Here is a picture of the combo --- the creamy color will be my cabinets, the dark brown paint and then the fabrics are window seat and window treatment. The little glass crackle tile would be periodic in the floor. I could do crema marfil floor tile as well, but again, not much info! BTW, kateskouros, if I had an island like your gorgeous island, I'd be propped up on it making margaritas!...See MoreDo you ever feel like the 'counter top' police?
Comments (29)I think perhaps by definition we TKO are disproportionately fussbudgety. What's it all for anyway? You can't take those perfectly unscratched cabinets with you. Maybe have yourself buried with them like pharaohs? Nah..... Dings Happen. And as for dh's who can't refrain from cutting on granite - well, that's why we just need to teach (or have taught) our children well.... :) And in the absence of that, this is why we have MIL jokes... ;) FWIW -- I drive around in a minivan that has a cracked bumper; you can see its innards, the metal "I-beam"-like thingymabob in there. It is very out of place in LA where so much is just-so. I attract a lot of attention. But it is not worth it to me to spend the money (thousands; more than the car's worth) to fix it. And in all honesty, I don't care, though I recognize it gives many the willies. Thing is, it reminds me of an interlude in French Canada where the ding was inflicted by a snowplow. They have a very different relationship with snowplows, snow removal and those who perform said operations there. The previous winter there had been several individuals killed by errant snowplows. But subsequent inquiries had determined the individuals were simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time" -- like my car and its bumper (parked, on the side of the road with many others just like it). Things happen, and just about all that changes is our reactions to it. Seems a life's lesson I rather value leaving visible on my bumper. But of course that's way too long a story to explain to the guys trolling parking lots looking to "fix" it (not) for a few $$....See MoreHow do I "marry" existing flooring, cabinets with new counters?
Comments (27)Here is a kitchen which I am showing you because of how well the colors work together. Your cabinets are a different style but similar color. The green / gray - I think it is Dry Sage by Benjamin More - and the white bring out the best in the cabinets. The countertop is Tunis Green Granite. Other countertops would also work. My countertop is LG White Pearl (also sold at Menards as Flaked Pearl). Many of the Menard's stores have a large display of this countertop which is helpful because the 4" x 4" sample is not a good indicator of the total look. Here is more of a close up. It does have a busy pattern: I happen to really like vintage / french country style and my cabinets lean that direction already - so the farmhouse sink and counters added to the style that was already possible. With you thoughts on such high end modern look as a waterfall countertop, you are working against the feel of your cabinets. They have the arched door, which is country / French country and soffits - both aspects lean more cottage and less modern /contemporary. You could paint them, but the feel would still not be high end modern. You can have a very pretty refreshed kitchen with the right colors and new counters and backsplash. But, it still might not be your vision. Look at lots of kitchens online and see what you like. Be careful not to be unduly influenced by marketing which wants to make you dislike your present surfaces. The gray / white trend is big now, but something new will come along in a few years and all who have transformed their kitchen /homes to gray and white will no longer be "on trend" - that is OK if they love the look and feel of their home - then trends do not matter. However, if the style was done because it was fashionable, then the marketers will be able to again make it felt that changes need to be made....See MoreWhat needs to match/how do you do it - counter, walls, cabinets?
Comments (13)This is a pic of the door to my dining room, which is the wood all throughout the house. I can never get good shots of this wood. It looks a little yellower here than it really is. I know "birch" isn't quite right, but it's my non-KD shorthand for lighter wood. The cabinets will be on the opposite wall from the door, so we may be able to make them just a tad lighter in color....See Moredivachar
