Dear Houzz - are you listening?
Comments (0)I'm done with Garden Web for a while. I hate using the Houzz format and now you've gone and corrupted something that was such a joy to use - our old Garden Web. I'll check back in a few months and if things have been fixed I will consider returning ("fixed" as in returned to former Garden Web normal formatting with dated posts, photos, original GW user names and not the Houzz user names, normal dark font...need I continue?) WHY is this forum buried under "Advice" in the upper right page corner. Anyway, goodbye...See MoreFirefox Stylish add on to customize your Garden Web site
Comments (22)I don't know how it is on a Mac, but on a PC I have found it for the three browsers I use: Firefox, Chrome, and Opera. I also installed it for Firefox on an Android tablet, and it works there too. I think there are less options on the tablet though. Very few use Opera, so I will elaborate on the others. In my Firefox and Chrome on the PC all the way in the upper right below the close window button there is a button that looks like three horizontal lines. Click that to see more menus. In Firefox you want to select "Add-ons" then search for add-ons. In Chrome select "More Tools", then "Extensions", then go to get more extensions. Search for "Stylish" made by userstyles.org, the logo is a white S with color blocks behind it. Install it. Then on your browser toolbar there will be a button with an S on it. When you are on a website that you want to see if there are any styles for, just click it to find styles for that site. You can pick a style and install it which just means copying some stylesheet text to your computer that is applied just when you visit that site. You can use the button in the toolbar to toggle the style on and off, and even use multiple styles on the same site. I made one to change color and font, and another to experiment with layout, but have both enabled at the same time. You can update or remove the styles and the add-on at any time. Anyone can create and submit a style to the site, and you can always change the style after it is on your computer too if you know a little css code. I just found a good color selector that gives you the color codes to use either for handcoding or entering into the form at userstyles before downloading the styles with options. I made my default style with grey because it was easier on my eyes, but it is very blah. The other ones are dressier. http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp Probably more than you want to know, but I thought it would be helpful for anyone not familiar with installing add-ons. Stylish has been helpful to me. At first I tried just darkening my screen to avoid the eye strain, but that just made all the pictures too dark to see....See MoreHouzz user data breeched...
Comments (8)No letter either. I got my notice from HaveIBeenPwned.com which told me I was pwned. " In mid-2018, the housing design website Houzz suffered a data breach. The company learned of the incident later that year then disclosed it to impacted members in February 2019. Almost 49 million unique email addresses were in the breach alongside names, IP addresses, geographic locations and either salted hashes of passwords or links to social media profiles used to authenticate to the service. The data was provided to HIBP by dehashed.com....See MoreAsk for more security for your Houzz account
Comments (17)Of course I would not want someone else posting on Houzz under my credentials but more importantly it is the acquisition of my personal information, bit by bit, from a variety of on-line sources that at some point can lead to a perfect storm. Off the top of my head I would bet that in ones Houzz account, at the least, there is listed one's name and email address. So say your Houzz account has been comprised (say because of a poorly chosen password or the like). And this piece of information ie email address, coupled some other "pieces of the identity puzzle", say the through social engineering ie "data mining" which results in more personal information e.g. address, confirmation of your (full) name or maybe even a cell phone # (maybe gotten through FB or some other social media sites or other forums that one might belong to under the same username and or email address). Having these two pieces of information really opens up the possibilities for "bad things" to more easily happen. For example one such scam that has been in the news lately is "The number porting/sim swapping scam": https://www.iheartradio.ca/cjad/news/fraud-alert-you-might-want-to-know-what-a-port-out-phone-scam-is-1.10036931 Please do a search for more such examples. This scam is happening with great enough regularity that "LAWMAKERS ASK FCC TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT SIM SWAPPING" ie (from January 8 2020): https://duo.com/decipher/lawmakers-ask-fcc-to-do-something-about-sim-swapping With your email and "them" in control of your cell #, the "hacker" can do a partial login to other sites that you might consider of more value to you...say your email account. And when they select the option "forget password", and with you having 2FA enabled but with the SMS option being the second factor then that code is viewable by the hacker, letting them get into your email account. For me that would be disastrous. Of course one can argue that can never happen to "me". Fine. But I want the option to better secure my personal information found in my Houzz account....See More- 7 years ago
