Can I have two different types of hardwood on one story?

I have dark beautiful wide plank hardwood in our formal living room and dining room. I'm replacing hideous old tile that runs through the kitchen, family room and hallway. The floor types only connect in the doorway of the dining room and kitchen. The foyer splits the floors in the front of the house (it's saltillo , and I'm keeping it). My house is high traffic with 2 kids and a dog and a pool, the ugly tile covered floors see a LOT of action. I like the look of light oak floors (and Herringbone patterns!!), but don't know if it would be a terrible idea to have mixed hardwoods. Should we do the same hardwood throughout (I'm scared of ruining it with pool water). Or must I choose another tile? Any opinions on porcelain wood like tiles? We live in Los Angeles and I've got Spanish style influences and I also really like Modern Farmhouse aspects. Advice please!! Thank you!
