Patio Door Swing Issues - Help Decide!!
Comments (12)advertguy2, we have your Option #2 set-up and love it. When we built this home almost 17 years ago, we went through a similar analysis (although we don't have the issue of pantry cupboards on the far side) and settled on this as our best option. One plus we've discovered since moving in is that the counter right by the door is a very handy landing spot for food on its way to or from the grill on the deck. Set the plate down, open the door, head outside. This also means you're not juggling plates of food, putting shoes on (we're a no shoes house, too) and opening doors all at the same time. I'm just not that graceful! LOL We plan to remodel the kitchen sometime this year (wish I knew then what I know now so that my kitchen functioned better) and that door/counter set-up is something we intend to keep. One thing you could do that in order to gain a bit more space just inside the door for shoe storage is to go with a window slightly smaller than a fixed door. A plus: you can open a window for additional air circulation and never worry about it hitting the pantry cupboards. Or you could have a swing door between two fixed sidelights....See MorePorch Swing
Comments (15)janniemac, the white supports that you see are 4x4s, but they probably don't need to be that big. The ceiling joists run perpendicular to the 4x4 supports and the beadboard. The joists weren't in the right place for how far we wanted to hang the swing from the back of the porch, so the 4x4s are each lag bolted into two joists and the eye bolts for hanging the swing are in the center of the 4x4s. I think you could accomplish the same thing with 2x4s. Hope that helps!...See MoreFront porch rocking chairs and swings?
Comments (32)That's good idea to consider a vinyl or poly product. I love the look of wood but probably wouldn't be so good about regular maintenance to keep them looking nice. Laughable - ouch re the bentwood rockers! I'll keep that in mind while shopping :) amck - beautiful water view! I don't think I'd ever want to leave your porch. I'm more of a water girl myself, originally coming from the gulf coast, but we had to sacrifice being close to a lake in order to get the amount of acreage the family would like for horses (DD) and privacy/outbuildings (DH). I'll be very happy with the view of our pastures and pond, but think I would be just as thrilled to live on a postage stamp size lot if I had an ocean view or a beautiful lake view like yours! Allison - acreage and a lake view? Sounds like heaven! Love your porch furniture - I could imagine spending all day on the swing bed :) Yours has always been my favorite GW home too. I'm so torn between decorating our new place in the warm, European cottage style similar to your home, which I love and is closer to the warm, rustic tones of our current home, or instead going towards the more crisp farmhouse style with the brighter whites, soapstone, and painted furniture, which might be more suited to our TN farmhouse with its white painted brick and black shutters. Maybe I'll find a way to harmoniously blend the two styles :)...See MoreOur 1st home! Back deck - small porch
Comments (13)I had a tiny, tiny deck in my last home. I had a grill out there, and a square table with four chairs. Since it was just me and SO, we usually only had two chairs out there, they were folding chairs which we could keep in the basement and take out when we had company. Then we had a small swing but you could get a small loveseat. They make really cute folding chairs and tables which you could have on hand if you ever wanted to entertain more folks out there. We also had a fold-able, portable fire pit which we could set up and set our chairs around if we wanted to have a campfire. I'd also recommend some plantings and maybe a wind chime or water feature to bring a pleasant calm sound out there, sometimes needed to block out noisy neighbors. It doesn't have to be something elaborate, a really small fountain is the easiest to maintain. Looks like you have NOTHING in the rest of the yard, so I'd plant some shade trees, small ones that bloomed pretty in spring and something called a pleasure garden, which is something you put across from your seating area to give you something nice to look at. Does not need to be elaborate, and I can't really say what you will like to look at. It could even be a series of metal wall art hung on the fence . . . you know best what floats your boat. But my top priority would be getting some shade trees in, and now is a GREAT time to plant trees and other perennial plants. Great time to find deck furniture on sale too....See Moreparty_music50
