Summer vacation advice....Texas heat and leaving my roses!
Comments (5)michaelg, I have been told to do that and never have, but good reminder. The drip irrigation is a bit harder to determine, as this is the hose with holes every foot or so, so it is not a tube directly feeding each plant, but I will see what the rest of the system does. I am curious how long an average system runs...and I know time should not be the measurement, but wondering if I am way off. Thanks for the input, and I will do that. Jeri, great idea. I am hoping to get the remainders of my "in pot's" in the ground...but 106 today!! It is so hard to leave these unattended. On your timers, how long do you run them? TOO, I have wondered if I debudded roses in hotter areas of the yard, if that would help destress them. I recall one year I pruned a bit, and ended up killing a few, as I guess they took that as a sign to grow. But debudding? Sounds like an option. What do you think?...See MoreMy Roses for the summer
Comments (6)Wow, I loved that orange unknown! And I have 4th of July but it is just a baby. Still it had 2 or 3 blooms on it early summer. It is a little lopsided at the moment- 1 4 ft cane and then one about a foot. I hope it evens out eventually. I saw it as a climber on a long arched structure recently but it was kind of leggy, of course w/ the brutal heat and lack of rain, that might be why. I sure hope mine stays healthy. Comments (8)If you're in a cold zone, a likely contributor may be that the canes that appear live are actually on their way out with winter damage that isn't apparent till a little later in spring. I always do about three pruning passes through all my roses in spring, to catch the canes that looked fine a few weeks ago and then slowly (or suddenly) start having dying foliage. It doesn't mean the rose is having problems at all, it's just that those canes aren't viable. Your growth from the base looks nice, so I wouldn't hesitate to prune off canes that are starting to fade. About 75% of my roses are pruned to the ground every year, including a majority of my Austins, but they come back just fine and bloom as if nothing happened by mid-June.
