I don't know about Ring specifically, but most of the video doorbells have a wide range of view. There are also wedge mountings to help adjust the angle of the doorbell. Also, I'm guessing someone coming to your door would at least partially turn towards the doorbell to ring it.

I would think it would also depend on where your door bell is located as to how effective it would be. Some door bells you reach down, others are at chest height. Most videos I have seen of law breakers they turn their heads down so you would only have a picture of the top third of the face.

My biggest fear with those hardwired wi-fi ringers is that I’ve seen articles about how easy they are for some of the bad guys to hack. I know most people have some kind of security to protect their network, but I’d make sure that whatever you have is going to do the job before having it installed. (Sorry, I know that’s not your question but I thought I’d throw it out there just in case it can help someone reading this).

I don't have a ring but I do have cameras. I have one directly above the door angled down to see the entire area in front of the door and door the sidewalk. So it picks up the motion from the sidewalk as they approach the door and of them at the door. That usually provides a clear view of the whole person. Once they are at the door I will be looking down on them. I can talk to them and they will generally look up directly at the camera since that's where my voice is coming from. So even if you don't have a direct frontal view you should have some of them approaching the door.

We had a visitor at 5am a few nights.

Walnut, the Ring customer service people have been incredibly helpful whenever we had problems or questions. We don't have the doorbell cam but a couple of Ring security light/cams.

It is good to know that customer service has been responsive. That insight is appreciated.

My friend has her Ring doorbell on a sidewall. It works fine, because people always look right at the doorbell when they're about to ring it.

My Ring Pro is on a sidewall and works great. I can adjust the field so I capture more/less. Almost all look at the doorbell when they ring, some make funny faces and not so funny faces :)

Ring customer service is wonderful.

Friend has a Ring and it's on her door frame, in a wedge shape so that it is angled toward the place where a person would stand.

I have a Kuna sconce that is also a doorbell and camera. I like it better than Ring, and it is more discreet. People do not realize that it is a camera, and I have it mounted on a side wall instead of the wall where the door is.

I get videos of everyone who comes to the front door through my Kuna sconce - the other cameras supposedly save videos onto a memory card in the display, but we've not had good luck with that. I can see the Kuna videos on my phone and save them if I want to.

Lars, I had not heard of Kuna but will definitely check it out.
