Question regarding wired doorbell
Comments (13)My doorbell works. There are only two wires: a black one and a red one. Since the plaster guy simply cut the wires rather than unscrew them, I could see where the wires went since one end of the wires was still screwed on. When I connected the wires from the wall to the doorbell and rang the button on the ground floor the doorbell worked. I pressed my downstairs' neighbor's doorbell button but it did not ring, as far as I could tell. He's not home so I could not confirm. But if I can hear mine from the ground floor, and I'm on the 3rd floor, I'd think that I can hear his. Anyway, I'll know for sure when I test it while he's at home. Assuming that his doorbell is not working, I'm puzzled as to how my doorbell being disconnected has affected his. The wires do run along the same wall and I'm sure are all connected somehow. Very curious....See Moredoorbells for idiots: it rings but isn't lit up
Comments (6)Thanks for your answers. (I thought maybe something had happened when the inspector tripped or tested the GFCI that's right below the bell, although I couldn't figure out why it would still ring.) So do I have to turn off the power to do this? Then unscrew the plate, etc.? I have to say that my general rule is that I don't mess around with electricity but if it's really simple, I may give it a try....See MoreDoorbell button diode Question
Comments (7)The diode is used in parallel with the switch to act as a half wave rectifier as part of the low voltage DC power supply for the electronic doorbell. These are used in electronic doorbell chimes that can be wired into traditional 24 VAC doorbell circuits. Pressing the doorbell button applies the full 24 VAC through the circuit which is detected by the chime and plays the melody. The low voltage DC supply allows the chime to continue even after the button is released. They are directional, and need to be installed in the direction indicated by the chime mfg. If you don't have the info, you can usually try it one way, and if it doesn't continue to play after releasing the button, turn it around....See MoreReplaced doorbell with smart wifi doorbell, what to do with hole?
Comments (3)The part of the wall is a little recessed and since the Ring has a fisheye camera of 180 degrees, the fact that it is recessed means i will be looking at the wall on both sides and straight out the front lawn....See MoreWalnutCreek Zone 7b/8a
