I have a vintage one similar to the above on our side door. Only a few can figure out what to do with it. I have a small, old, school bell at our front door (our front door is a barn door so it its kinda offbeat to start with). No one ever wants to ring it. Finally, we got something you hide under your doormat. When someone steps on it, it rings. However, we turn it off unless we are having a party ... otherwise the dog rings the bell. : )

I have a Ring Pro, which I know you are not asking about. I have had it since December and love it. The Pro is on sale at Costco right now for $199. The benefit of paying a bit more is the Costco deal comes with one year of free monitoring. Otherwise you will end up paying $3 per month for the monitoring and still end up with the same out of pocket expense as the Ring 2 mentioned above. You have to sign in to see the Costco price. On the other hand, Best Buy has the Pro, chime, and a 3rd gen. Echo Dot bundle for $229. The Echo Dot shows as a free add on after you add the Chime and Pro bundle to your cart. I purchased my Ring Pro from Best Buy and could never get the chime to connect. My Pro works perfectly without the chime.

I have a Nest thermostat and Nest doorbell. TLDR: I like them. They work and were easy to install and integrate. If you can, connect them to your 5ghz wifi (more stable and stronger connection). Thermostat: I was initially worried about if I would actually get use out of the thermostat because I am someone who really dislikes the idea of a thermostat automatically changing its temperature based on activity or other "smart" functions -- I like my temperature to be steady and comfortable. So, I do not use the Nest's automatic schedule and just made a custom daily schedule like any normal thermostat can do. So obviously I am not utilizing the main feature most people get a Nest thermostat for. However, I have found it useful for being able to see a daily history of use (ie: how much the system uses heat or ac), plus I now have humidity control (steam humidifier), can change the temp when I'm away from the house if needed, and I love that from a distance I can look over at the thermostat and it actually lights up and I can see what temp it is at. There are a ton of other useful features that I know are saving on heating and cooling costs and I did notice a difference in comfort in my home. Doorbell: I really like being able to see when deliveries happen, I can watch wildlife from time-to-time, and avoid those door-to-door salespeople. I also get an announcement of who is at my door when they ring the doorbell, ie: "Mom is at the front door". It was very helpful to have when a service company arrived to my house early (before I got home) and I could talk to them to tell them I was 5 min away.

It's off topic, so I don't know how much I should get into my phone's lobotomy. But you asked, so I'll try to explain as briefly as I can, apologize in advance for the OT post, and hope that people who aren't interested will skip over this rather than getting upset with me. The why: What I said above. I just don't want my phone sending my personal data to some computer over which I have no control, for purposes that I don't consider useful. I also pay for every megabyte (prepaid service), and I'm cheap. The how: The right way to start would probably have been to flash an open source ROM and not load the optional Google apps. That was more than I wanted to get into. So, stock ROM, no Google account, sync off, GPS/data/wifi/bt off when I don't need them. Nothing in the cloud; contacts, calendar, email, and maps all on the phone. I prefer a dedicated GPS receiver, and use Osmand (Open Source Maps Android) for directions only when lost without one. Play Store, Google Services, search, weather, voice recognition, and many other background apps and services are disabled. Firefox Mobile and websites replace some common apps. No social media. Apps are mostly open source, all sideloaded. I even have an open source Youtube app. Updates are manual on my schedule. It's smarter than a dumbphone, but a little dumber than a normal smartphone, I don't miss most of the surgically removed features, because I use a real computer for real computer tasks, such as this one, and only use the phone as a computer when it's the only device available. Bonuses: Despite being over 7 years old, the phone is fast. The battery typically lasts 5-8 days. Service cost is usually around $5-10 per month. Probably most people wouldn't want a phone like mine, but it does exactly what I need and want it to do, and no more. Your mileage may vary.
