Comments (17)Now if you use British Colonial style you can mix it all together in one room. Remember the British colonies ranged from Hong Kong, India, Australia, parts of Africa, the Carribean, Canada, the US, among others. I found this info: The Victorian era of the mid to late 19th century saw the British extend their empire around the world, from Singapore to East Africa, from India to the British West Indies. With them, they brought their language, their ideas on government, their custom of afternoon tea, and their furniture and designs. The Victorian Era was a rather formal time and the British, although they enjoyed traveling to the distant outposts of the Empire, didn't want to forego the comforts of home. They brought the solid and sturdy furniture designs of England and adapted them to the tropics. Along the way, they adapted Asian and African motifs into those traditional designs. This mange became British Colonial style and it is easily recognized by its sturdy, yet sometimes fanciful pieces, of teak and mahogany as well as its use of rattan, leather, and animal prints. Hardwoods, such as teak and mahogany, were particularly suited to the humid climates of the Empire. Unlike softer woods, like pine, that tended to warp in the tropical humidity, these woods stood up to the most extreme conditions and were readily available in most of the colonies. Often furniture was carved by native craftsmen using British designs, and you'll frequently find little flourishes of Asian, Caribbean, or African art, intermixed with the original carving. If one looks carefully at that mahogany four-postered bed, you'll notice, perhaps, a carved pineapple atop the posts. The Colors and Prints of British Colonial Style Both exotic and practical, British Colonial design emphasized muted colors, such as browns, beiges, and straw, in sharp contrast to the flowery prints popular at that time in the motherland. The colonial palette reflects the tropical lushness of nature, which, whether in the West Indies, Africa, or Asia, was never far away. One of the hallmarks of British Colonial design is the contrast of hard sturdy wood with the bright sunshine and cheerful colors of the tropics. Animal prints, Indian sari fabrics, and detailed and realistic botanical prints added interest and emphasized the colonists' fascination with their adopted lands....See MorePlease help with guest bedroom layout
Comments (26)WOW mjlb - some great ideas. I've always had one vision in my head but this is a wonderful place where strangers come up with great ideas. Now I need to wrap my head around it. Why the tub/shower and not just a shower? I thought most people would prefer only a shower. This is an old house that was changed over the years. Original brick house built somewhere 1835 - 1845 (it was always listed 1825 but old maps did not show it then). Addition - where this room is located was added 1860's or so and then converted it into a 2 family in 1914 and this room into a kitchen. I think the addition was the summer kitchen and this was a servant's room. The "small" room turned into the pantry for the 2nd floor kitchen in 1914. The doorway into the main house was added when converted into a 2 family. The wall where the bed would go isn't flat but I may be able to work around it (sent DH and DS to take measurements and was surprised they weren't more exact). The window part jets out a little plus the "pillar" made of brick. Here are more pictures of the room Looking into the new guest bath Pantry built in I would like to keep but open up the top. Maybe I could put the frig on the right side where the sink will be located? I hate to remove the drawers. Should I strip the paint (sandblast?) off the brick? It's painted now but in a few places it's peeling....See MoreNeed help with finishing touches for guest bedroom
Comments (18)Ingrid, I am a retired children's librarian and I was drawn to the colorful pillows because they reminded me of the illustrations in the old picture books from the sixties. That was very perceptive of you to get a child's vibe from that. I totally agree-no more blue! I love the idea of botanical prints and have been looking online for something with yellow and pink or red. When we get the furniture arranged, I'll hang the art over the bed lower as you suggest. katinparadise, I like the idea to paint the blue frames black. And thanks for the folding advice for the throw. I'm actually wondering if a different throw would look better. Would a different color look better? Red, darkish yellow? I never realized that blues are so hard to match. mrykbee, I'm still eying that cute little rocker you showed me yesterday and I love the welcome basket idea. I had the same thought about taking the mirror off during the winter months when we need to use the thermostat. auntthelma, I agree that moving the thermostat would be the best solution. I just painted this room myself last month and got my husband to get rid of the old intercom grill. I don't know why we didn't think about moving the thermostat at the same time. The good thing is, we're both pretty handy and I have leftover paint, so hopefully we can get ourselves in gear and just move it. I do not understand why they put it where it is. The heater is on the opposite wall! But I do love the baseboard heaters with each room having its own control. Thank you all so much for your suggestions. My 91-year-old dad often visits us for weeks on end and I think he'll get a kick out of the new, fancy surroundings....See MoreNeed help with colors for master bedroom/bath remodel
Comments (4)I think you're going to want to take your color cues from the finishes you choose for flooring, cabinets, etc., especially in the bathroom. Once you have those, start pulling paint swatches that coordinate and take you in the direction you want to go. I've seen some lovely and classic looking barn doors done, so I'm sure you can pull off the look. I have seen people caution against using them between bedroom and bath though, as you may have more light and noise leakage that you get with a traditional door....See MoreBeth G
