Griffith Buck Roses

Sorry if this has been discussed, but how hardy are some of these roses really? Are any actually cane hardy to zone 3 or 4? Thanks

I don't grow any Buck roses myself (yet), but the only roses which are mostly cane hardy for me so far are wild roses, rugosas, and scotch/spinosissima roses. Everything else is crown hardy for me. But it may differ if you have a good microclimate. For example, my next door neighbour has 'Morden Sunrise' which is cane hardy on most years (not mine though, haha), and I've seen 'John Cabot' in Calgary in a sheltered location with zero die back, it was nearly 10 feet tall and stunning.

The Buck rose 'Prairie Princess' might be a bit tougher, it looks like it's rated to zone 3b on the HelpMeFind website. If I had the room I'd consider 'Quietness' and 'Distant Drums'.

Neither of the Morden Sunrises that i've had were cane hardy, and both only lasted a few years before not coming back. I've never grown a Buck rose.

Edited to add that i have grown a Buck rose after all - checked your link and saw that Hawkeye Belle was a Buck. I'd forgotten that. It was beautiful but only lasted a few years too.

I grew Serendipity. Just took a look at Dr. Rousch's Blogspot Blog, which has a useful table. Blackspot ratings run from '0' (which actually is shown as a blank instead of a Zero) to '3'. A '3'-rated rose gets severe infestations of blackspot. There was only one '3'. Serendipity is rated at '2', while most roses on the Buck list are at '0'. I planted quite a few Serendipitys, since the color range schemed with the range in our house's brick, and assuming that a Buck rose would be disease-free. My experience (and that of the young surgeons who bought the house, then of the young attorneys who bought it from the surgeons) is that there is a huge spring burst of bloom and growth, followed by a late-spring defoliation from Blackspot. Collectively, we've learned to allow the defoliation, and then, when temperatures are about to stay above 90, to fertilize and drip-irrigate. High temperatures inhibit Blackspot. Thus, with high summer temps, we could keep the roses leafed-out and blooming. Too, one can leave the roses leafless until really cool weather is coming, and water/fertilize in time to have a second burst of bloom in October/November - even a mild December. Serendipity likes sun, a lot of water, and constant attention (much deadheading needed). The Attorneys are now judiciously removing the original canes, one-by-one (i planted in '06), which are quickly being replaced by new ones. Serendipity blooms best after a hard winter, and will keep its leaves up until winter gets really cold. The Siberian component in its makeup is quite evident. Anyway, this is a portrait of one of Buck's "worst" roses (disease-wise). Eight years in the ground, and they're still doing quite well (own-root, BTW).

I've had the general impression that my Kansas roses (Zone 6) have had more BS problems than usual. I only grow one Buck rose--Earth Song--it is usually very disease-resistant, but its leaves has been having a slightly sickly look with some blackspot--lots of yellow leaves falling off and the new growth definitely was not vigorous or even as green as it should be--until just the past couple days. I'm thinking the earlier rainless weeks were harder on the roses than I realized. For the past week we have had rain nearly every night --the soft slow rains that plants love--and Earth Song and other roses have suddenly perked up and begun putting out much better looking foliage. I did spray about a week ago, so that may also have caused improvement. I haven't really studied any of this closely, but I have been thinking that a number of the roses are experiencing more BS and yellowed leaves and undercolored, smaller-sized new leaves--but some of the roses have shared none of those symptoms. If nothing else, it is good to hear that I am not the only one wondering if something more is going on this year or not. I'm thinking now I should have been doing a lot more watering about a month ago. Kate

I live in Zone 10 southern California, but within the coastal zone which has misty conditions spring-earkt summer, then settles into a true Mediterranean climate by August which continues till December when the rains start. Many roses will mildew, ball and sulk here during spring - early summer, and then after the dry weather takes over in August, the same sulky roses will bloom beautifully and have clean foliage till December. I tried growing Carefree Beauty last year - probably planted it in June - a nice healthy ownroot rose from ARE with really strong roots. After the first few weeks in the ground and a promising initial burst of growth, CB just sulked and mildewed. It did not improve after the dry sunny late summer settled in, so I shovelpruned it in December. I sometimes gift unhappy roses to a friend's garden in Topanga Canyon which tho inland from Malibu has 100+ temps in the summer, and these roses are often very happy there as long as they get enough water. So maybe CB would do better in a more classic southern California climate than my microclimate provides.

The path to Enlightenment.....errr, at lease about Earthkind roses in Addison It's on Beltway between Midway and Marsh, just a little east of the Fire Dept.; but on the north side of the street. Take the Tollway South to Beltline. Go west on Beltline, south on Midway then right or west on Beltway. You'll pass a residential area, then notice a tennis court on your right. Turn right into a parking area and look around...you're there. There are2 or 3 sections of roses then a large group of iris which might be pretty now too. (There is also a street just west of Sam's on Beltline that takes you almost there, but I can't remember the name...I think it starts with an S. It connects to Beltway just east of the Tennis and volleyball courts.) report back! c

Marcia, I hear Hawkeye Belle is a stunning rose! It looks like the Buck roses can really vary in hardiness too, it looks like he bred quite a few.

After comparing my yard with my neighbour’s I strongly believe good soil & good microclimate makes a huge difference when gardening in this region.

I know this is an older thread but I'm commenting in case someone else goes looking for info on the Bucks. I'm in zone 4 with minimal snow over the coldest spells and I don't winter protect.

Mountain Music has been tip hardy for me for three years and is always one of the first to leaf out and then bloom. It tends to put more effort into blooming than growing, so it's on the smaller side because I'm not good at pinching off buds, but always has lavish flushes of highly fragrant blooms.

Amiga Mia is cane hardy for me but slower to establish. This is its third year and it's only now really starting to take off. It didn't bloom quite as enthusiastically as MM, but still has nice blooms with great fragrance. It's quite a spicy scent and I do like this rose, in my opinion it's worth waiting for it to come into its own.

Folksinger is on its way this year so I'll update when it gets going :)
