Desperately seeking paint advice
Comments (4)I generally do like the trim to be the same, especially in open areas. Other folks don't care and will change colors in a room. I have seen it done in a kitchen that was open to the adjoining spaces, It was ok, but I probably wouldn't have done it. White trim and stained wood are so classic, but painted colors are showing up in magazines and decorator rooms. I have seen some I like and I have seen some that I like but would tire of. Some makes an impact, but I've seen colored trim chop up a room. If you decide to change it, make sure you love the color and can live with it a long time -- the trim generally takes a lot more work to change, especially if you have to do everything. Wall paint is generally much easier to change. The different colors do have to connect and flow. Benjamin Moors says their Affinity color palette is designed to mix any color with another and have them go together, so you could look at those if you are not confident about combining colors. Where you change them is hard to say without seeing the space, but it is best to try to keep continuous wall spaces one color and use corners, doorways or other breaks to make your changes....See MoreDesperately seeking help with layout
Comments (25)Buehl: What do you mean when you say that a fridge next to the mudroom entryway would create a "black hole" in that corner? Assuming the fridge is counter-depth, wouldn't the window illuminate that corner? Or does "black hole" refer to something other than light? I'm asking because in my current kitchen design, which looks a lot like the one you've drawn up for Firstyeargardener (great work, btw!), I have the fridge basically where you've put the message center above, except that my fridge would be roughly 70" from the window wall, instead of 42". What problems do you foresee with that? Hope I'm not hijacking the thread here (I'm kinda new at this), but maybe this question might be relevant to the OP too? Firstyeargardener: At the risk of repeating myself, I wonder if the half-wall solution I mentioned in my previous post would make you feel better about closing up the opening to your dining room a bit in order to accommodate the banquette. That's what we have now: instead of a 6' wide opening, we have a 3.5' wide half-wall (42" tall) + a 2.5' regular doorway (minus door). From the waist up it's 6' wide of light and air from the next room, but from the waist down it's a cozy corner for the banquette/eating area that keeps it from feeling as though you're floating in the middle of the passageway. It's one of the few things in our current kitchen that works. One of the few things we're going to keep in the remodel....See MoreDesperately Seeking Layout Ideas for New Construction Kitchen
Comments (11)ondanonima, damiarain and rebunky, WOW! I am so glad I submitted this to Houzz - I am totally impressed with your ideas. Thank you so much! ondanonima, we are still in the design phase so we can still choose most of the window/glass locations. We want that east wall to be mostly glass. We will probably have one or two French sliding doors covering the entire space (kitchen – living room) with floor to ceiling glass as an option. There's even an option to install a corner window in the NE corner and have the sink as close to that corner as possible. There's not much to look at out a window toward the west end of the north side wall - just the least attractive side of the neighbor's house. I never would have thought of leaving the west wall completely blank. I have to mull this over for a while. We like the idea of lots of floor to ceiling glass on the east wall and it might be hard to give that up. rebunky's idea is appealing in that it frees up the east wall for floor-ceiling glass but I'd need to have the sink more toward the east end of that wall which spoils the pantry in the NE corner! Also I don't know if we'd ever want to sit with our backs to the view :( Your ideas have made me excited that there can be a really good arrangement for this space!...See MoreDesperately seeking suggestions for awkward corner nook!
Comments (73)Apologies if this has already been said but I don't have time to read all comments. I had a living room that was similiarly awkward and it took me so long to find a good furniture placement. Bear with me. While I can't see the rest of the living room, I suggest arranging the living room furniture with the end of that stone wall (fireplace I assume?) as if it were the wall. So in other words the rug would stop where or near where the fireplace ends. What makes that lovely space awkward is that it looks as if it's trying to be part of the living room. My suggestion would be, after you move the rug, switch the table and chair. Table under painting, chair in a "room with a view." It becomes a destination, a resting spot, a lovely special corner for retreat. At that point you have created an entrance area for the living room, possibly a gallery effect on the wall. Add a lamp to the table below the picture to make it a a real statement piece, which it is! Maybe some lighting in window area. Then you play with placement of things in the corner that draws the eye and gives people an opportunity to say, what's the story behind those skis? P.S. What a view out that window!!...See MoreYayagal
