choosing a ventilation hood
Comments (3)Thanks weissman! What I have now is an 8" hole in the ceiling vented to the roof jack with an electric bathroom fan in the ceiling. Weird, I know. The jack on the roof seems to be in fine shape, but I'm sure that the ducting in the crawl space needs replacing no matter what. The new range and hood will be on a different wall- the drawing below shows the hole (circle with and X) and the new range location. It is about an 8' distance straight across, or 4' along one wall and 7' along the other. Given those distances- might I be ok using the old hole? The hoods I'm looking at go from 300-750CFM. I dont want to always have to use high power, though. I wasn't told NOT to use baffles in a home, just that they did not work as well as mesh filters at lower power, but he was vague as to what is "low" and "high" power....so I was not convinced. I have mostly been considering Kobe hoods, as they seem pretty quiet, and they have hoods in all three types- mesh, baffle, and impeller fan type with grease cups, and are under $1K. thanks!!!...See MoreHydronic baseboard heating (gas)/AC options for a new home
Comments (6)I believe I understand what youâÂÂre looking for and why you want it. DonâÂÂt give up on geothermal yet. Nothing is more efficient, quieter or more comfortable than a modern hydronic system. What youâÂÂre looking for is possible with a geothermal heat pump. To use a completely hydronic system for both heating and cooling without ever installing any ducts or a gas line, as a gas boiler may not necessary. Using a combination of in-floor radiant, radiators and fan coil units can provide complete zoned comfort. If you were planning for a gas boiler, ductwork or mini splits for air-conditioning; you can save ALL that money and instead put it into installing the geothermal system instead. Have your architect and geothermal professional review the technical drawings in the geothermal manual linked to below, as an example of what is possible and how it might be done. Cut & paste the following links. Clients that have done this are among the happiest and most satisfied. The final link below is to help you in finding a qualified installer in your area. Comments (16)The amount of zoning and zoning controls is up to you and your budget. Correct sizing, equipment selection, good ductwork design are paramount. However, the most important is finding a qualified dealer with demonstrated experience in zoning, zoning controls, ductwork sizing and design. I personally believe Carrier/Bryant have the best integrated residential zoning in the marketplace. I normally agree with Mike but I would prefer the second floor system to be attic located rather than in basement. Ductwork would require R8 insulation or better. While modulating furnaces are nice, I think they are overkill for Hotlanta location/climate where average winter temp is around 40 degrees. Comments (20)I also like the Panasonic fans. Here is one with a built in motion sensor and humidity sensor. http://shop.panasonic.com/home-and-office/power-tools-and-ventilation-systems/ventilation-systems/ceiling-insert-fans/FV-08VQC5.html#srule=best-matches&sz=24&start=25&nextIndex=0&cgid=ventilation-systems Don't try to save money on your fans. If you have teens and young adults they tend to forget to turn fans on and you can end up with issues in the bathrooms. Luckily we are in CA with a low outdoor humidity level, but you still don't want to be steaming up the bathrooms regularly....See MoreCorinne Masterson
