changed my mind about the car I'm getting , new advice welcome!
Comments (1)I still have a 90 Maxima with approx. 250K miles (odometer intermittant) and it still runs great. Only normal wear and tear items have had to be replaced. Plenty of power still (it's fun to "race" some of the newer sports cars and beat or at least keep up with them and watch their faces - I just laugh at them and pi** them off). Paint and trim and interior still look really good. Everything works. Gas could be going up to $4 in near future, so keep that in mind. I still get about 29 mph on hwy (checked when odometer is working) - not sure about city. Also not sure about 2000/2001 year for either model. Overall, I think they've both done well for all years. My timing belt change interval is 60K miles. Can't remember it it has the "interference" type engine that can be damaged if timing belt breaks (there's a web site of a timing belt manufacturer that lists this for all car - Gates Rubber, maybe?). I usually do the water pump at same time since they have it opened up - about $400 here to have independent mechanic do both). Good luck on your purchase, whatever you buy. I'm hoping to get another year or two from mine, before buying another good reliable used vehicle....See Morecar alarm going off at odd times
Comments (3)What sort of alarm do you have? What are its features? If you have an alarm that senses the presence of moving objects near the car, that could be the cause. At night, roving, good sized, animals can set it off. At our location, the usual triggers are deer, big dogs, racoons, and people. If you have an alarm that senses when the car is bumped, wind gusts can set these off if the sensitivity is set too high. Also, a loud sound such as a thunder clap can shake the vehicle enough to set off an alarm. If your alarm has none of these features, and senses when the auto is tampered with, It likely has a remote function. In rare cases, military aircraft flying overhead may set it off if that aircraft is using the same frequency. I know of one case whne Cadillac first introduced their remote key fob, all over town in random locations, the trunk lids were popping open. GM and owners traced the problem to fighter jets flying overhead. The Military never responded to GM's inquiry, but the problem went away when GM changed their frequency and the coding for the key fobs. This brings up another possibility and that is your own key fob. Where is your key fob when the alarm sounds? Is it in your pocket with other assorted items such as a pocket knife? If you should take a nap with your car keys in your pocket, you could be accidentally pressing the fob switches. Most remote key fobs have a "panic" function that will sound the horn. Sometimes, the act of sitting down with the key in your pocket can press the key fob button. Does the cat like to play with your keys, maybe pouncing on those? There could be a radio transmission such as someone's garage door opener that is triggering your alarm. These days, auto makers are aware of thee possibilities, and design against these, but if there is a maverick transmitter in the vicinity or some off-brand device that does not adhere to the rules, that could be the source. And then, it is possible that the unit is bonkers and needs replacing. In this case, a likely suspect is the receiver....See MoreAre you selective about whose car you'll ride in?
Comments (36)Since I got my license I've often been the person who drives. I got to the point I was very uncomfortable when I wasn't driving. Much was just that I was fidgety and didn't know what to do with myself while riding. Riding is boring to me. I'm better now and can ride with a good driver but there's so many bad ones out there. I got stuck 20 miles from my car one time when I rode with someone (they left without me) and since then I've always wanted to have my own vehicle. Plus, often, when I "caravan" with others, I've had to help them out when they have car trouble. They wouldn't even carry tools with them or extra oil, antifreeze or wash fluid. I've saved the day countless times by being prepared. I have even been driving myself to the ER when needed. And I know I won't be asking my sister for a ride there if it happens again. Middle of the night, nobody around and she's sitting waiting for the light to change to get onto the freeway entrance ramp! (SMH) I just yelled GO! "Well the light is red!" I told her there's nobody around, it's the middle of the night and we're not going to the mall, we're going to the emergency room so either go, or move and I'll drive. There were also some choice words going through my mind at the time. As I get more crippled in my old age, I will say I've been fortunate with (most of) my friends being very considerate about offering to drop me off at the door or something to accommodate needs when we're out, whether necessary or not. If I'm hurting real bad sometimes I'll take my cripple card so we can park closer. However, I'm about to the point where I'm considering refusing to ride with anyone who has a smartphone unless they've proven themself to be responsible....See MoreHow many cars go by my house daily
Comments (30)The road out in front of my house was gravel when I moved here and for the next appx. 10yrs(?). Very little traffic. Then they did the ole' chip and seal and the traffic increased, esp. when the road was discovered and used as a short cut to a major route. We have big semis using it too as new businesses develop North and South of our road. One used to be able to let your dogs - and my pet sheep - wander about the property with no concern for them getting hit on the road! Those days are gone forever. And gone forever is the dirt and gravel that helped soak up the rain water. Now it runs down the road and off the sides right down your driveway to the house....See Morechisue
