Young citrus look more like bushes- growing weird?
Comments (14)K. I cut off the sucker. It was actually part of a trunk. All the other branches looked more like suckers... Hopefully I did the right thing. It was only two little branches, so it would be weird if the other parts were the sucker I think. It would make the sucker the actual tree and that would be strange I think. Hopefully I didn't do damage :( I was able to take pictures of the other trees with my cell phone! Ok, so here we have what I am almost positive is a lemon tree: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747330872321811346 This is the tree that had one lemon last year, though I never tasted the fruit- but it looked like a lemon. This tree also has very bad leaf curl. Here is a pic: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747330975224339442 I think this was from being really thirsty last summer. I water deeply about once a week, but it doesn't seem to get much new growth and the leaves don't change. Should I do something else? Next pic: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747330981373239506 I don't know if this is lemon or lime and the shape of the tree is terrible. Is there anything I can do to fix it and get it to look more like a shade tree eventually? Here is a pic of it's baby fruit as well: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747330979421196178 Next pic: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747330997258299090 I don't know what this tree is. Here is the fruit pic: https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747331006607107522 Same question about shaping the tree from above. This next tree is only about 3 feet tall, it has horrible thorns like the first tree I told you all about. I'm not sure if I should dig it up and plant shadier trees or if it's worth preserving. I love fresh fruit. https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747331013173657138 This is another mystery citrus tree. I have ever seen fruit on it. https://picasaweb.google.com/heather.leigh.green/May27201202#5747331020964139874 Same question about the shape. Thank you for your help!!! I am very overwhelmed. I haven't even began to tell you about the ash trees and the apple tree... but this is the citrus forum :)...See MorePruning a reaching citrus tree to more of a bush-like tree
Comments (3)If it were my garden tree, I would prune the grapefruit at a vertical line about even with the end of the wheelbarrow handles; and then prune the lemon long growth back to the canopy level of the grapefruit and the rest of the lemon. The grapefruit does not backfill readily unless it is pruned to encourage that; the lemon... looks like a Eureka or Lisbon... will fill more easily and the cutting of the long limbs will make it "prettier". By the end of the growing season your tree should look more like what you want. Be sure to fertilize it a cupla times this summer with a good citrus fert. and water it deeply once a week....See Moreants on my citrus
Comments (22)r u people joking or am i in illusion the black ants r there to look after your plants. For the love of god stop killing these helpers. They don't hurt when they bite. They r actually completely harmless. If u take the time to have a look they try and make out they r spiders so they can freak u out but in fact they r completely harmless. Leave them alone they r amazing the way they make a nest out of leaves and branches. Only God knows what goes on in inside their little city. Just let them be and they will help u out. These black ants r the most amazing ants I have ever come across. They r the blackest of black, they are the most harmless of all the ants in Australia and for some reason u want to kill them. Only God Knows why. 4 the love of God leave them be and enjoy the little surrade they put on trying to make out they are spiders because thats all they've got....See MoreAnts on citrus again..harmless?
Comments (8)Thanks Sammers and John! You are right John, I inspected the tree in the afternoon today and noticed only 1 ant on the tree. I checked on the other plants in the same area near the Meyer.. I have a small mum that's been neglected and dying. I finally took a look at the mum plant and noticed it had ants too and under the leaves were many many green aphid's! It looked horrifying. I didn't know what to do so for now I put it in a closed off area a bit far from the Meyer. I wanted to step on the mum and crush all the aphid's but there were so many, the idea of all of their guts sticking to the bottom of my sandals was too gross!...See Morebklyn citrus (zone 7B)
