Comments (16)Kelly, Now I know your name isn't fighting. lol I know Sandy and Sherry but didn't know yours and I haven't had much time to be on here much lately...too many forums too little time. Anyway, I know there are lots and lots of different types of pipevine and I suppose there are various ones that the Polys can live on that the PVS can't. It's too bad that the poisonous kinds of pipevine are sold in the US but I suppose they're here to stay. There are lots of plants that shouldn't be here. I hope you have a "safe" kind of pipevine in case you ever get PVS and you could move any to that vine that might get laid on the one that isn't safe for them. BG, I think the people on here take very nice pics too. I guess you and I won't ever get Polys up here unless they're blown WAAAY off course lol, but we could get the PVS (you can get them up there, right?). I am trying for them but haven't gotten them yet. I don't know if any pipevine is sold in your area, but I've never seen any around here. Sherry, I don't know how you remember everything you do, but I wish I had such a memory. :) I suppose I read a post on here of Mary's saying something to that effect since I joined here, but it's hard to recall everything. I miserably fail at it. Ha. Some things I do remember though, and I had it in my head about the poisonous ones, but I didn't know who had posted about it. Most of us just pass along the info without having had firsthand experience with it. I wouldn't doubt Mary's word if she could verify this, but since you seconded it, then I'm confident that I remembered correctly. I actually wouldn't have passed along the info to my friend if there'd have been a doubt in my mind about that being what I had read before. I'd hate for you to spend the money to do a trial of this, but if you'd like to for verification purposes, that would be nice. I know it's never nice to lose a cat, but if people can learn from it, then you have my approval. ;-) YEAH, like YOU need MY approval. Haha. I've learned so much from you and the others since I joined here about 3 or 4 years ago. Believe it or not, a lot of it actually stuck. :) Cathy...See Morecat eggs?
Comments (3)Are you talking about those two little yellow areas on the top of the leaf? I doubt seriously that they're pipevine swallowtail eggs. Pipevine swallowtail eggs vary anywhere in color from golden orange to orange to red to burgundy red, and they're usually laid in clusters in the area where the leaf meets the stem, usually right in the crotch area, sometimes on the undersides of the leaf or the branch of the vine close to the crotch. Here's a picture of pipevine swallowtail eggs - Sherry...See MoreMamas4boys - Butterfly plant suggestions for zone7b - photo heavy
Comments (1)Hello, Just wanted to butt in and say that I have plenty of seeds for the orange milkweed or butterflyweed, and I have lots of seed pods forming as we speak. I also have many volunteer baby Rue plants that could probably be mailed in a pinch. I haven't checked for seeds of the Rue, because I have so much already growing. Unfortunately, I have yet to see any Giant Swallowtail action, despite having every host plant it is known to frequent. I also have seeds for two other varieties of milkweed, A. incarnata (swamp) and one called "Red" by Seed Saver's Exchange. If you're looking for seeds, try the wintersowing forum--also an excellent way to get multiple plants started inexpensively and very reliably. I could certainly send you a care package to get you started. Let me know. Martha...See MorePolydamas Galore!
Comments (5)Mechelle is right, I HAD the Aristolochia Frimbriata or Whiteveined Pipevine. It is a slow grower, doesn't like to get the leaves wet (if they are laying on top of the soil and it rains alot, they rot). I had a little of it and I put 3 Pipevine cats on it. They devoured it and then I was left to feed them what I had of Aristolochia Tomentosa, which is the Wooly Pipevine. It doesn't grow much faster and is tougher. I found the cats don't like it as well. Anyway, I lost two of the cats, guess not enough to eat. I have one in chrysalis now. I don't get too many of the Pipevine butterflies but when I do I try to watch for the eggs and move them if I have vine for them. Another vine is Virginia Snakeroot. I ordered one from Loess who posts here but I guess it never came up. What did show up in its area was Crossvine, which looks like Snakeroot. I don't know if I was sent the wrong thing or if it somehow got into my yard. I never bought one to plant. The only place I know to check is Mail Order Natives or Shady Oaks, I think is the name. I need to order one for myself. I am hoping that the Polys slow down here. They will have to make due with the older part of the vine if they want to continue laying. My back yard in pretty wide and the vine covers two sides and a part of the third. I have given so much away and have baby plants come up. I guess I will need to let some grow to fill in where it is eaten back. I do have seeds from my Pipevine, if you want some. I don't plant them, just let them fall to the ground but others who I have given seeds to have had success. You don't need to do anything but plant in loose soil and barely cover them with soil. It does take a while to get them start....See Moreannabananaflzone9b
