Need help trying to refinish old farm table
Comments (15)I don't know what color you should go for with all those different woods in the room, but if you want to go natural I suggest that first you at least wipe down the table with an old white T shirt dampened with mineral spirits (to get any dust off). Really should have used a chemical stripper instead of sanding the finish/stain off. Sand to 220, wipe down with mineral spirits after each change in paper (I don't know what grit DS ended with). Then brush on a couple of coats of thinned (half and half) dewaxed shellac (Sealcoat is good) and denatured alcohol. You can lightly hand-sand with 320 between each coat but I really haven't found it necessary. After a couple (or 3 or 4 - depends on how thickly you're putting it on) you can use a gel stain to adjust the color if needed, then I would put on a couple of coats of gloss poly (sand and wipe between each coat), you can stop with that or top with a lower-sheen. I have only done doors and stairs this way, don't know what in particular you would use on a kitchen table but ask at finishing store, I'd think you'd want food-safe but don't know what brand or line would be best for durability. The shellac really makes the pine almost iridescent - I think you'll like it....See MoreRant: why buy at a store if no chairs to try?
Comments (36)Well so many people posted on this thread that I thought I would post one last time to show you the chair I ultimately purchased, and how I came to the decision. It became clear that I was not going to find my ideal chair on the floor of any store, so I decided that I would sit in as many as I could and take notes on the measurements to determine what seat height, seat depth, etc. would be best for me. I sat in a Hancock & Moore chair at Stickley that was very comfortable but found another H&M chair that had similar measurements but in a style I preferred. There were no H&M fabrics that I liked so shopped for fabrics and did the chair COM using a dark brown mohair velvet. I had seen a photo George Smith chair that I really liked and just decided to try to get as close to that as I could. The chair I wound up with is the Bradley chair but I chose a wider ottoman (the Foundation chair ottoman). The chair arrived last week. I am really happy with it! I decided to buy it through Stickley as they matched price and were local and great to deal with....See MoreTrying to make decision about the curtains and the chairs
Comments (31)I like the draped curtains ! Brings some softness and curves and personality to the room and the sheer layer also draped makes it look more interesting...maybe more an expression of who you are...this room has a less rigid look...a collected feel...made up of things you like...that go together charmingly...I would however get a rug that has a smallish pattern ...with more colors in it including some of the colors in the chairs...I always feel rugs in a strong more solid coloration are harder to keep clean looking...and tend to dominate the look of a room such as this...See MoreTrying to design a room - large NYC apartment - coffee table?
Comments (2)If you could post a floor plan with measurements, that would be helpful. From what I can see, first impression is that there’s too much going on. My thoughts: 1. Put the couch on the long wall where you have your chairs. Move the chairs to the window wall and place a table with lamp between them. Place the arching floor lamp between your desk and couch, but nestled closest to the couch. Get a large piece of art for over the couch. Add 1 or 2 more pillows in greens and oranges. Get a square or round modern wood coffee table. Place the orange poof in front of the fireplace, maybe at an angle near where your chairs will now be. Move the other end table and lamps out of the room. Replace your drapes with white or ivory drapes. I’d personally do woven shades on the windows for privacy if needed and do light linen drapery panels. Anyway, my two cents. Hard to tell if your dining table is in the best spot and how the tv area relates to the overall space....See MoreHolly Stockley
