bamboo - invasive - how to plant
Comments (10)Definitely think it through and make sure it will work for your growing area and your gardening style. If you can get to a TSC store.. or are near any farm store, you could purchase the large feed/water bins, remove the bottom, and sink them into the ground to act as a barrier. On the other hand though, i have a friend who has a huge 20ft tall stand against his house and then has lawn up to the stand. The roots obviously run all over the place under the lawn. All the shoots that appear in the lawn are just mowed back. He hasn't had any issues on keeping it in it's place. My father has had a stand against his house for 25+ years of the yellow groove type. He has nothing but stone walkways and garden beds surrounding the stand. The gardens fill the whole back yard (no lawn). His too has runners that go 20+ feet out from the stand.. which send up shoots heavily in the spring. All he does is just cut the shoots off and all is well. He can keep the footprint of the stand the exact same each year. Now obviously he digs into decent runners as he is tending his garden beds which he has to deal with, but it's a decent trade off in his mind. He is an avid gardener though, so he can stay on top of it. If you are a every once in a while gardener... and would rather just plant and forget it.. i would stay away from it (unless you try the underground barrier method)...See MoreVariegated bamboo (Pleioblastus)
Comments (4)I planted Pleioblastus fortunei 'Variegatus' last year and it overwintered just fine, multiplied nicely but not too aggresivley. Our winter temps here near Jackson got down to -14 and -15 two nights in a row last winter with very little snow cover, so it did die back completely to the ground. It is a runner, but not as vigorous as others I've grown. I also have Sasa tsuboiana and it has overwintered without a problem and is spreading faster than I would like, so I am going to put in a barrier for this one....See MoreCan invasive bamboo sprout from fine roots?
Comments (8)Diane- You've heard too many scary stories about bamboo. Running bamboo won't root from cuttings stuck in the ground. There are a few tropical, non-running bamboo that might be able to be rooted from cut culms, but it would be very difficult, and in your Zone you likely wouldn't have any. Even if it rooted, you'd notice leaves and you'd be able to pull it out of the ground before it developed any appreciable root system. Bamboo gets invasive when you don't do basic maintenance until years after it's planted. I'm betting that's exactly what the situation is with your neighbor. Don't worry about the bamboo stakes you want to use. If it roots, contact me and I'll get on a plane to document the miracle and remove it....See MoreAnyone up for an unusual decorating project?
Comments (56)Its great to hear that the project is moving forward! Just a few thoughts.......... I think putting the retail shelf by the workstation crowds things too much and does not give the client time to browse. Put the display in the seating area. I would not put a shelf up by the seating area to display retail items. They might get pilfered by clients who think they are "samples". Plus they could get knocked over all the time with clients bumping the shelves. They would get dusty on a shelf too. You want the products to looks fresh. I would put them in a small curio cabinet. One that is wide and not too deep, and has lots of glass, preferably on three sides, with minimal framing so as not to block the view of products. You can pick them up for a song on CL. Paint it black or a color to go with your wall color. Get it in a moderate size so as not to crowd the space with the two chairs. Angle chairs. I would use floating shelves by the work station. The brackets crowd the area. The chandy you chose looks great but maybe a bit heavy for the space being wrought iron or what ever metal it is. Maybe add a few more crystals? You can buy them at craft stores. If you Google 'mini chandelier' or 'kids room chandelier' you can see inexpensive ones that are lightweight in feel and a bit more sparkley. Maybe there is something else out there? Target? I would not do a mirror on the wall behind the workstation next to the bathroom door. Having two mirrors reflect into each other would give it that 'Cream of Wheat' effect. It would be too cluttery and give a tunnel look to the area. I know that mirrors are important to a salon but I have never seen a salon where this is done with mirrors. I would not use wicker baskets. Too Country. Metal would be noisy and plastic looks cheap. How about faux leather baskets? They come in many colors. Or ones covered in fabric that they sell? I've picked them up real cheap for my use at both Ikea and Homegoods. You can use them with or without the lids. Picture it without the newspaper. It comes in white, pink, other colors: I know I had said upholstery is probably out due to hair and dust and you agreed but what about slipcovered chairs? Upholstered chairs would be more comfortable and wouldn't be noisy like metal ones. You can get those dining room parsons chairs for a song on CL and a slipcover for $14.99. They even have 'shortie' ones that show some of the chair leg. You could change them out with the seasons and they can be washed anytime for freshening.
