Big, BIG Blind Mistake
Comments (21)Loda, for some reason iPads always seem to do that. If I am on my pc and post a pic no problem but if I post a pic I took with my iPad it shows sideways on the forum but looks perfect on my tablet. I was scrolling down thinking I was going to see something hideous and I don't think that at all. I love a rich chocolate brown also but I can see how using a lighter linen type curtain would brighten it up. Your window really looks quite nice just the way it is though. I agree with Jaysmom that you just aren't used to the look. When we put our hardwood floors in the first day I just freaked out and hated them. The second day when more of the floor was laid I thought it was looking good and by the third day I LOVED them. I believe this will happen with your windows also. A big change like that takes a few days to start to look "at home"....See MorePurchasing Items during build?
Comments (20)We bought a bunch of stuff early. Lighting fixtures in particular. Also some plumbing items. But… I can't use the plumbing items (1 sink, 3 faucets, 2 shower sets, and 1 antique, refinished claw foot tub that I loved. Sigh.). Our builder is willing to use them, but our plumber simply doesn't want to use brands he can't find parts for locally. Also our local inspector insists on all the paperwork for every CA compliant plumbing item. It came down to time=money issue for our plumber. So we have substituted all items with brands that have company reps. to back up the items locally. Kohler and Rohl. I've researched all my favorite items online extensively and our plumber can get all those items much cheaper than I can. Our builder has been super flexible in every single possible way - we love him. But the local inspections can really slow things down, and I didn't know that beforehand. I thought we could just print up a sheet from the internet about the item and show it to them. We'll just use the other items for later projects. Just our experience. I'm really glad we did the lighting fixtures over time. I was able to grab things I loved when they were on sale. We also bought our antique vanities for sinks and saved quite a bit on cabinetry. But that isn't the look everyone is going for. ;) Oh, and another thing I bought in advance: beautiful rim locks for the doors with porcelain knobs. I loved them! But alas, cannot use them in our county for fire safety reasons. Something else to use for later projects......See MoreLazy susan or blind corner? Surprised KD recommending blind corner
Comments (42)suzi-yes that's right they are rectangle. And I am aware that I'd have lost a triangle (that would be my wasted space that I didn't need for anything) - and the circle in the rectangle does have some wasted space on the 'corners' anyhow. I thought it out and was prepared to do that. I just offered up what I have and what I contemplated as an option in case it was helpful for the OP. I would have been more than happy to do so and it would have housed the stuff that I have in my kitchen just fine, wouldn't have missed it a bit and susans are pricey. Some people love them, some people like them and some people just don't have them. You don't have to have a susan as a solution. Space calculations have been done showing that it's not really the loss of space that it can appear to be. I am okay with not preferring them even though many or even most enjoy them and find them useful. closing-off-a-blind-corner calculations beth09-I know it! I actually have a drawer stack that's somewhat empty - hahaha. It is a shock to the system. You will find what works for you. I will say the super susan (no pole) pie shaped does seem much sturdier than my old regular susan with pole....See MoreSpanish RENO that's gotten TOO big! HELP! Need new floor plan!!
Comments (41)Wow what a lovely plan. You must be very excited. Must the entire house be done all at once? I believe everyone who has done a minor update in their home (half bath ) to a giant full home renovation has to go through the dreaded Want vs Need list. Each person or corporation doing a renovation must figure out their budget and what they want to spend on their project.. Some people have unlimited funds but even those folks put together a plan. Do you have a General contractor or is your architect doing both? Sometimes a GC can really help control costs and help control the scope of a project and stay within budget. With that said, is your scope itemized or listed in sections per price? Your contractor/architect could probably help you figure out how to trim costs and to even do things in sections. What has your architect suggested? I would go through your list of wants vs needs and see which falls into place. Sometimes it is about deciding the structure (basement) of the house is more of a need while the La Cornue Grand Palais range is more of a want. I wonder if filling in the basement might end up being the cheaper option in the end? With a smaller basement you could make your entire project smaller. So much to think about but I am sure you can do it! You are on your way to making your dream home a reality....See Moreremodeling1840
