Comments (25)I can't bring myself to photograph them, but most of my roses look like HoovB's example. The biggest bloom ever, here, for R. banksia lutea was dried to tiny yellow crisps. And while poor "Grandmother's Hat" and "De la Vina Mystery" keep pumping out blooms, they turn into potpourri as they open. :-( Secret Garden Musk Climber has produced a massive blast of white blooms -- but don't look to closely . . . the dry air has crisped the lovely once-yellow stamens. "Historic Powell House" (?'Baronne Prevost'?) is a rare bright spot, and I sure welcome it....See Moreit's hot, hot, hot!!!! and other whining....
Comments (14)Jeff, I miss your beautiful flowers and photos!!!! I keep checking back at the Rose Gallery for your latest, but can't find you alas! I want to stalk again, hee-hee! maryl, I had to laugh, because I too am a midnight owl person, yet still! dragged myself out of bed at 6:00 a.m. in the morning with only 3 hours of sleep, but by 7:45 a.m. I had to stop working in the garden because it was getting to be way too muggy even then! So I crawled back to bed to take a brief snooze...By the time I woke up again, I felt as though I had been hit by a train. I was so groggy and tired. And I still tortured myself with 5 minutes-at-a-time deadheading and checking out my flowers leaves and herbs, then racing back to the shelter of my house...Poor Eluane, she's got long fur, but because she is a busy-body sheepherding Border Collie, she always wants to check up on what I'm doing...she's even more of a masochist than her Mama! and will follow me faithfully out to the garden Every Single Time. And for the rest of our week it will be: 98, 97, 96,97,95 and hurray, a breakthrough turning point of ...91 on Sunday...But I'm sure 91 is nothing compared to the 100s of late July that I'm expecting....See MoreIt' Hot! Comments (15)Tomorrow is supposed to be the hottest day so far this year at close to 100. I work midnights and sleep mornings if I'm not babysitting the grandson. I usually go out once I wake up and have a caffine shot for energy. Today was so hot that I waited until after 4 pm before I could make myself go out. I roll up a bandanna, wet it, and tie it up around my face and slide it up into the edge of my hair to keep the sweat out of my eyes. I sometimes roll one up, wet it, and tie it around my neck also to help keep me cooler. I want to plant more trees closer to the house to help lower the temp. The drought is really hurting everything. The grass is crispy; the veggie garden is hanging on with soaker hoses; the trees, flowers, and shrubs are hanging in with hand watering. Since we just moved to this place last April (to be closer to the grandkids) most everything is brand new and isn't deep rooted enough to handle such prolonged drought without extra watering. DH is starting to worry about the well since rain has been almost nonexistent this summer. But, I can't bear to see everything drooping. So I water and pray at the same time. We are going on vacation next week and I intend to drive home midweek to water. We are going to mulch deeply and give everything a deep watering the day we leave. Before next year I want to lay soaker hoses and put them on timers. But, I still handle the heat better than I can deal with the bugs. They eat me alive. I even had a fly worry me to death while I was trying to water tonight for Pete's sake!! Can't use bug repellant due to allergies. Still, all things considered, I'm a blessed person and love love love my garden. It is worth all of the blood, sweat, and tears!! Ah, the dreams I have. So many of y'all have such awesome gardens and I drool all over the screen while I'm dreaming and planning. Thanks for posting all of those before, during, and finished pics. That's what keeps me going. Betty...See Morehot hot and more hot
Comments (67)Well we are starting to get into our late summer weather pattern where it can be cool one day and scorching the next. We had a cold front push through last night and brought a good rain to my area. today we are having what I call a "california day" 60's in the morning and mid 80's during the day. Ive never been to CA but I imagine thats what its like, LOL The next 7 days are forecasted to be like this. Its such a welcome relief but also a reminder that I need to get the greenhouse ready and start making plans for overwintering. Our first frost isnt until October so I have time. Our weather here can be so crazy that it made me think of a few things. Those who live or lived here may relate and those who may visit might take this advice. You really have to be like a boy scout to live here. In the middle of winter we will have days in the 80's and then the next day it can snow 6-8 inches. The opposite is also true, snow in the morning and mid 50's to 60's by afternoon. In the summer it will get to 110 and the next morning it can be in the 60's. I have left for work in the morning and it was colder by 20-30 degrees when i left in the afternoon. anyways it keeps you on you toes. Mike...See MoreMaria Elena (Caribbean - USDA Zone 13a)
